I was wonder if any CS/CIS majors or those already in the field involving local area networks, know a site that summarizes the whole process? I'm looking for something detailed but short. Like if you need a NIC card,a modem, the whole nine yards.

Both the PC Magazine and PC World websites have excellent articles about how to set up LANS. They cover wired and wireless networks.
