Excellent Excellent band. If you haven't listened to them before, download All the Nations Airports, The Lowest Part Is Free and/or South Carolina.

They're better than anything on the radio today, even though they're broken up.

Only it's more than a week. Whatever.

It's frustrating pushing older "forgotten" bands onto people. I'll beat anyone who refuses to listen to my Teenage Fanclub and Afghan Whig CD's to NEAR CAT-DEATH.

Trust me Missy, I remember half of those bands when they were new, so I'm just as old and pseudo-cool...

Mark Langelan

You mean Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees and QOTSA, right? If so, his solo albums are stunners. Creepy, rocking, and basically Tom Waits if he could at least kindasortamaybe sing.

OK Missy I knew you were cool already and cooler when you propped Pavement.

But just as I was ready to sign off, you post an Archers Topic!

First of all, I'm 35 so i saw them when they were touring for Icky Mettle. Amazing album, saw them at CBGBs at - listen to this show, opening for a bill that included Heatmiser (Elliot Smith's original band), Everclear (before anoyone heard of them), Treepeople (Doug Martch's old band - Built to Spill and Now solo) and finally The Waldos (members of original New York Dolls).

The Archers rule. If you don't have it already, get Icky Mettle, and if you want to break the law, by all means download the amazing "Web in Front" one of my anthems and song #7 that will appear on the soon to be released soundtrack of my life. Otherwise I can email it to you. Although the Archers broke up check out Eric's band SpookyJ.

Also, Missy if any of the Archers back catalog is out of print, I have all their discs, so just email me and I'll burn whatever you want.

Trivia:

Who were the Archers of Loaf named after?

Oh geez memory lane and I stuill listen to these.

Pavement. What can be said. Like Caravaggio was to art, music was not the same after them. A seminal amazing band that if i could write and sing and was a genius like SM and Spiral Stairs I would have maybe formed myself. Get the reissue of Slanted and Enchanted with all the goodies (which I have already) and the DVD Slow Century.)

Loved Mark Lanegan when he was with the Trees. Saw them a lot with Dinosaur Jr. one of my favorite bands of the era. His solo stuff is amazing. The Waites comparison is a good one. I think I'll listen to Scraps at Midnight right now.

Jawbox AND JAWBREAKER too- Have all their albums and wonder if Jawbreaker's lead singer still has a voice box. Amazing stuff.

Pixies and the Huskers - seminal amazing and influential bands. Pick up the book Bands that Could Be Your Life. They could have been mine.

Ok while, we're at it, some of my faves from this era that still get heavy rotation on my player and IPOD:

The Replacements - my favorite band of all time.

Silkworm - erudite, amazing, sublime.

Afghan Whigs - amazing. amazing amazing. Live they were even better. Gentlemen, Up in It, Cingregation, 1965, Black Love..............LOVE

Superchunck: Slack Motherfucker. One of the best singles of all time.

Olivelawn
Drive Like Jehu
Treepeople
Crackerbash
Sunny Day Real Estate
Meat Puppets
Jesus Lizard
Royal Trux
SLINT!!!!!!!!!!!

The list goes on. Let's talk music at the next event. Perhaps I'll even have tribute to great 80's and 90's alternative/punk band party at my house soon.

Man, I thought I knew what it was like to feel old when I first heard that. And now I look up & its almost 20 years later. Damn, this calls for an old school thread. <P>

You're only young once, but you can be immature forever. :-)
