What is responsible for the increase in mental disorder among both children and adults? While it is obvious that mental disorder existed prior to the industrial revolution, do you think that we suffer from more mental illness than our ancestors? Are environmnetal and physical factors the cause? Or is it simply due to the increased awareness, testing, and treatment of mental disorders?

Probably. I saw "Gangs of New York" today and it looked positively relaxing.

I don't think it can be conclusively stated that there is a greater incidence of mental disorder now.

However, if there is, we must look to our longer life expectancy which gives greater time for problems to develop.

We also ingest a great deal more chemicals today than did our ancestors. We eat less healthy as well.

Finally, there is a growing awareness of mental conditions that was not previously discussed. There have always been people with mental difficulties. They used to be locked up or left in an attic. Now we are aware that they exist and can be helped.

I can't comment on the "crazy" aspect, but I do believe we have a lot more "free time" to be depressed.

It seems most people today are on some sort of anti-depressant. Many people suffer true hard ships in life. Sometimes I think we have it "too good." We have it very good in this country. Most of us don't have to "stuggle" the way our ancestors did. They were too busy worrying about keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table to be depressed.

I'm not saying depression is a "luxury" by any means. Depression is a certified disorder (I've been on meds and in counseling for years!).

Just my 2 cents.

I don't think it can be conclusively stated that there is a greater incidence of mental disorder now.

But there's more people on the planet now, and like you said, we live longer. And before "modern" medicine came along, who knows how many cases were mis-diagnosed or ignored?

David Horrobin presents his theory that a form of schizophrenia was one of the key factors in the evolution of the human brain, resulting in abstract intelligence, better problem solving skills, and greater creativity. A little odd, but still an interesting read...

ALICE - There is a distinction b/w "Western" mental illnesses and those that are universal. For example, anorexia is simply not found in 3rd world countries where people are starving from lack of food. It is limited to richer countries. Depression, OCD anxiety, sexual paraphelias are worldwide, although some are experienced differently by different cultures.

MOJOPIN - The problems always existed, we just didn't acknowledge them as mental problems, or we blamed them on the devil or "evil spirits" or just ignored them. The first surgery that we have evidence of was called trepanning. It was done by cro-magnon and neanderthals as well. It is still done (shudder) in parts of the world today. The surgery involves making a hole through the skull to the surface of the brain to allow the "evil spirits" causing the mental problem to escape. Come to think of it, this may be the earliest direct evidence of religion fucking up people's lives!

NICKEYE - I've read that. The main thrust is that shcizophrenics see things differently than do "normal" people so they see solutions that others do not. While this is true, the functional ability of most schizophrenics to implement a solution is questionable. Certainly it is a far stretch to say it impacted our evolution.
