View Full Version : Carbs
Some people say we need carbs for energy and stuff and tehre are all kinds complex carbs, simple carbs, and some people say eat no carbs at all.
I dont wanna do this whole atkins thing, but whats a good example of lowcarb foods for a "low carb diet"?
And does it really matter if you do or dont eat carbs?

I think I can speak with authority on this matter, being as this is what I do for a living:
1) Yes, we do need carbs. Consider them the gas that makes your engine run.
2) The American diet consists of entirely too many carbs, especially refined flour and sugars like breads, pastas, sodas, starches like potatoes and corn, and not even close to enough of the good carbs, the ones that come from veggies.
In a nutshell, When you eat too many carbs, your body produces insulin to transport it to cells. this is normal. But when you eat too much to many times, your body can develop "Insulin resistance" it takes more and more insulin to get the job done. eventually your body can't regulate its insulin anymore, and you now have type 2 Diabetes. Its more complex than this, but thats the gist of it.
Also, normal rise and fall of your insulin level causes an increase and decrease in your appetite (cravings). To stop cravings, you simply eat less carbs.
I suggest going with a 35% 35% 30% ratio of carbs/ protein/ and fat if you want to lose weight. the atkins plan is very difficult to stick with, and people often become nutrient deficient (or you can buy a ready-made plan from my business *plug* *plug*)

I don't diet or excersize, and I'd rather have pasta than steak any day of the week.

I'm lucky because I have a really fast metabolism but I've also noticed that I rarely eat junk food or after 7 at night. Even though I don't do a structured excersize routine, I do move a lot, for work and when I go out I'm always dancing, and well of course there's sex.

I'm not here to rub it in, but maybe the best bet for anyone that's trying to lose a few pounds is not dieting, but becoming more conscious about only eating when you're hungry, and not simply because it's time to eat.

Thanks for the imput guys. I've been very good for the last year or so: never drinking soda, never eating fast food (I've cut them both entirely out of my diet) and I've tried very hard to cut back on snacking.

Eating when I'm not hungry isn't even a good way to pass the time so I've pretty much abandoned that. I've started eating salads and veggies.

I know that alot of the weight I've gained is from a medication I was on becuase in light of all the changes in the last year of my eating habbits and within the last month and a half hitting the gym at least five days a week for minimum of an hr I still haven't lost a single pound. I've finally decided to come off the meds and pay even more attention to what I'm eating. I just dunno where to start and im a REALLY picky eater.

Anyhow: hippie how much is a plan like this gonna run me cause funds are really low?

I've noticed that diets are a lot like religion - they both claim that only they have the truth and everyone else is wrong.
There are critics and proponents of every diet.
The only effective way to lose weight is to eat less and excercise more.
If you have to take your medicine long term, and you feel that it is the root cause of the weight gain, ask your doctor to prescribe something else.

if that was true, then any diet would work, right? wrong.
eating too little often leads to nutrient defeciency, which puts your body into a starvation mode and slows your metabolism. This makes it harder to lose weight, and makes it much easier to gain said weight back (also known as yo-yo dieting)
When you exercise, your muscles break down. this is good, because normally they build back stronger, as long as you give them time to rest. if you work out 6 days a week, doing the same excercises though, those muscles will continue to break down, and you will never see any gain.

The above quote is absolutely correct. I did not say starve yourself - I said to lose weight eat less and excercise more. It's the only diet that works.
ANY diet that a person who is overweight sticks to will result in lost weight (when combined with exercise).
It's a very basic formula. Consume less calories than you burn and you lose weight.
Obviously starving yourself isn't healthy. Consuming the correct amount of calories is. If you're heavy, consume less calories and exercise more and you're guaranteed to lose weight.

I was looking through the ATKINs book recently and, i wont get into a debate whether his methods are sound or not, but he does say one thing that is very true..
The only diet that is succesful is one you can stay on, and maintain after youve reached goal. Americans gain and lose the same 25 (insert amount) pound all their lives in yo-yo fasion, which is so unhealthy.
there is no challenge to losing that 25 pounds - every diet will do that. Its changing your eating habits and keeping it off that causes the problem.
Any diet that YOU feel, you can do - to goal, and then maintain for ever, is the one that will work.

Its amazing how the slightest changes in what you eat can have a dramatic change. I don't eat a lot of snacks, or drink soda. On the rarest occaisions I'll have a diet coke or pepsi, but 99.9% of the time its water. Everyone always tells me I'll grow sick of it, but I've drank nothing but water for several years now. Of course I like beer, wine, and other alcohol, but overall I have very little drinks with sugar in them. If you reduce your breads, pastas, etc as well it can have big influence on your weight control. I've lost over 15 lbs in just over 3 weeks now. I started just before the holidays to see if I could stick to it through the roughest season and so far I've done fine.

Carbs are ok as long as you choose the right ones. I think it can be difficult to get certain nutrition and adequate fiber on a low carb diet without supplements. Abstain from empty carbs and choose oatmeal, yams, bananas, whole wheat and oat bran bread as snacks or side items.
When I decide to lose weight or need to fuel a workout I balance my carb and protein intakes and prepare as much of my food at home as is possible to avoid eating junk.

Sam is absolutely right. Carbs are needed, but in MODERATION. Substitute white bread/rolls for whole wheat bread or low-fat pitas. Substitute potatoes for sweet potatoes or yams. Try to cut out any kind of pasta. I hate brown rice so I stick with white rice when i cook, but I only eat a very very tiny portion of it. If only I could heed my own advice. I've joined Weight Watchers, had a trainer at Bally's did Atkins for a while and so far nothing has worked. Even more importantly, I haven't STUCK to anything faithfully either. I get bored within one week of doing something so following a strict diet like Atkins or WW is out of the question for me.
Gwen I think you'll see differences when you stop the medication, continue to work out and keep your diet like it is with the salads and veggies. Remember to eat more leaner meats like chicken and fish instead of beef. If you're craving steak, you can always eat it make sure it's a small lean portion like flank steak.
Water is key also. It fills you up throughout the day.

I'm a big fan of the breakfast cereal diet. Most breakfast cereals have a decent compliment of vitamins, carbs, fiber, etc. with low fat content.
Even the "sugary" cereals like cocoa puffs are vitamin-enriched.
Cereal + 1% Milk + Glass of OJ = perfect meal. Lots of nutrition, low calories, low fat.

The last time I lost weight, I was too broke to buy anything but pasta, whole wheat bread, peanut butter, jam and Campbell's soup.
I also did lots of biking and walking, so I guess I was burning more than I took in. . .
The next weight loss occurred because I couldn't eat AT ALL, but that's a different story. . .now I actually feel my body going into starvation mode if I don't get regular feedings.
My key concern right now is getting enough calcium and protein. . . but that's why tofu and peanut butter are perfect foods.
Also, for everyone who insists on cutting out pasta, just change your pasta choices - SanGiorgio makes a whole wheat pasta that doesn't suck, so long as you don't overcook it.
Perhaps it comes from my upbringing, but I actually prefer the "healthier" or "complex carbs" foods. . . and I also enjoy tofu and other soy products. Go figure.

I would like to announce that I will be starting Atkins Saturday Jan 11. Yep that means no more bread, rice, pasta, sugar, soda, and alcohol. Be wary when on Atkins: A recent study in "Nutrition Reviews" stated that eating more than twice the RDA of protein can lead to calcium leakage and bone loss. Concentrate more on replacing carbs then on loading up on protein (don't gorge yourself on bacon)

Effme, there's no way taking a vitamin
can prevent the heatth problems of
Atkin's! Why not eliminate empty carbs,
cut your total carb intake in half, and
concentrate your carb intake in the
morning as a more sustainable strategy?
Even better, if you go the gym
everyday you may be able to increase
your carb intake and still lose weight.
Maybe Hippie can say something about
the dangers of ketosis for low-carbers or
no-carbers. I'm not certain on the details,
but I believe it occurs when the body
attacks its own tissue for energy when
glucose is required but not available from
food. I think it is pretty serious.

A story in Time Magazine about 2 weeks ago talked about how the Atkins diet was ridiculed and scoffed at when first published but new research has found it to be effective and it is regaining popularity.
Any diet can have health consequences. This is true of a regular "non diet" where you eat what you want, and a "brand name diet".
The best way and healthiest way to lose weight remains eating all types of food, just less of them, and exercising more. When you burn more calories than you consume you lose weight.
The "fad" diets, like Hilton Head, and Atkins etc, can give you an intial rapid weight loss, but you can't stay on them indefinitely and the rebound rate is high.
