I love my state, with all my heart i do. But there are a few things i dislike about it. I know that New Jersey was the "suburbia" to New York City and Philadelphia way back when, hence why this used to be the largest trading hub for boats and other vessels on the east coast. The raritan river is one of the fastest rivers out there.

but here, i am compiling a list of what about jersey i do not like. and not like "it smells" if you are from new york, go over to freshkills you douchebag. Or actually go into any of the public housing in the urban settings... those places are nasty.

But here is my list

i cant run downstairs for a pack of smokes
i have to go to a liquor store to grab a beer
95% of the time, i have to take my car to go from point A. to point B.
New Jersey Turnpike Authority
Garden State Parkway Authority
high auto insurance
New Yorkers moving into my old neighborhood(there is a certain member of a certain mob that just moved in 2 houses from me)
Always constant traffic no matter where you go and what time you go at
I have to pay to leave the state
northern newjersey is rich, central jersey is working class(well, its starting to move in with the northern new jersey people), southern new jersey people are poor... and sound like southerners

keep this list going... i want to see other things that people think

I hate those friggin' jug handles. They just added a really warped one in Huntington NY and I hope its not a trend, because those things annoy the piss out of me.

you seriously did something wrong dear. i could have gotten to westchester in about 30 minutes from cranfordyou're right... what i did wrong was to rely on the MTA and NJ transit to actually get me somewhere quickly. most of that time was spent waiting for trains and things to come. i should really get a license

And circles.

NJ is a police state, run by crooked democrats ( insert Lautenberg references here ). You can't do this, you can't do that........and good luck trying to apply for a gun permit here. Get ready to pay even higher car insurance rates because you got caught not wearing your seatbelt in a road block. If you're a smoker and haven't found a good Indian nation online for cigs you're fucked on ultra high taxes. High corporate taxes are driving manufacturing out of state, so in the future all our kids can find jobs at any one of the millions of half vacant strip malls here. Any little land space is leveled, and they use whatever trees were there to build high priced crappy homes. The traffic at the shore area is a joke, and I take my life in my hands evertime I ride my motorcycle.

Other than that, I love New Jersey.

Always constant traffic no matter where you go and what time you go at

(see: Parkway South to Route 22 West)

This stretch of road is at a bumper-to-bumper stop at 5pm on a summer Friday with people getting out of work and heading to the shore....OR....at 3am on a random fucking Tuesday morning in February. The people who designed this two mile stretch of roadway should be publicly flogged.

I just moved to Union County NJ after living my whole life in NY state. I am now officially 20 minutes away from EVERYTHING. Good.

But the Traffic - both unpredicatable and inconvenient - I could live without. No Good.

um, arent you mixing 2 different things? You 2 are talking different directions. I can get from The Palisades Mall to Port Chester at 5pm on a friday in about 15/20 minutes, but going the other way can take over an hour. All the traffic is going that way. What's your point?

Reasons why i dislike New Jersey...

- My boyfriends ex-girlfriend lives there and she has a pretty big mouth for a little girl.

- My ex-boyfriend lives there who kicked me out!

- The girls in the go-go bars can't show nipple.

- Can't serve liquor after 2AM

- ...and like Terror said, 95% of time you have drive everywhere.

I can think of several, in no particular order:

- Newark (I work here in the University Heights district; something about the DAILY police/ambulance sirens, drunks at 11am, heroin addicts at all hours, drug deals, a train station that smells like piss, Sharpe James, the Starbucks and homeless panhandlers kind of rubs me the wrong way, historic and Ironbound districts aside, it's the places you have to drive/walk through to GET there that I find intimidating!)
- Camden (We drove through, once. Once.)
- Paterson (Add to everything I said about Newark {except Sharpe James} the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Paterson, Passaic County Courthouse, badly planned streets and an economic depression tracing back to when they closed the silk & gun factories)
- New Brunswick (I live here. There are parts of town that are nice; then you hit New Street and it gets a little creepy. I also HATE the current dictatorial Mayor Jim Cahill.)
- The Oranges (Like Newark, only more suburban.)

What I've noticed about all these places is that they all seem to be either county-seats, college-towns or both. . . perhaps the general quality of life is relational to the amount of politics and/or binge-drinking that go on there?

Just a theory. . .

...because its the armpit of the united states...and people still have mullets

The "armpit" thing is just a rotten, rotten, rotten rumor to make New York look better.

And mullets are only big if you're from Sayreville. . .just look at old BonJovi videos!

Many good things and people came out of New Jersey, for example:

- Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb here.

- The first ever intercollegiate football game was played here, in November 1869, between Rutgers and Princeton. Rutgers won.

- Paul Robeson (Rutgers College, 1919) was a scholar, athlete, actor, singer and activist; also from NJ. He's mentioned in another thread as well - the "famous people from your HS" thread.

- the "Jersey Barrier" concrete barriers on highways, used to minimize the occurrence of head-on collisions, were first used here. . .

I'm too sleepy to remember other ones, but if/when anyone knocks NJ without concrete backing up, I break out the NJ Facts. . . which I learned in my 3rd grade "social studies" class and managed to remember to this very day. *sigh*

In college, I became a historic walking tour guide for Rutgers University and still have not forgotten any RU history/facts/trivia or tidbits I learned for the tour. I even gave my current sweetie a modified version of the tour on our first date. . . :)

south jersey....that's it, other than that i think its a pretty formidable state that has acquired a very bad rep....i went to school in south jersey and the thing i noticed down there is an overwhelming awe of the city of Philadelphia...don't get me wrong its a great place to hang out but every single person loves the eagles, sixers, phillies, and flyers yet has no idea why...they flock to philly on the weekends like its thier job...trying to have an intelligent conversation with girls down there is like trying to get my girlfriend to have anal, it's not gonna happen...its like a god damn cult down there...if there were no Atlantic City I am unsure if i would ever step foot in that region of the state again

I know I'm the odd one out here, but I've always hated the fact that I can't pump my own gas. I'm sorry, but I just don't trust the gas jockey to fill up my tank. Usually, if I'm driving through, I'll fill up the tank myself while still in NY or PA.

Otherwise, Jersey's cool... can't beat the wrestling scene.

just seems to be "Too Many" people in a small area...

I grew up in Jersey City and it was once in the Guinness Book for being the "most densely" populated city. Now it seems like Jackson is. Sometimes you have to wait 3 or 4 light changes to make a left turn, and Jackson use to be "the sticks" not too long ago.

There use to be plenty of "well-paying" industrial jobs such as Colgate, Maxwell House, American Can Company, and a couple Auto plants but probably like most other states, they closed down.

But It's Home! :)

I was born, raised, schooled and currently work and reside here. I wouldn't trade that for anything, having traveled to about 40 of the 50 states and seen the crap that is out there.

One thing does stand out for me: Taylor ham, egg and cheese on a hard roll, at about any diner, at 3 a.m, after a night of drinking. Throw in some fries with cheese and gravy for good measure. Nuff said.

Thomas Edison also invented the first phonograph, the first "moving picture"/movie and made the first sound recording.

The first professional basketball game was played in Trenton in 1896.

The first boardwalk in the world, where else? Atlantic City.

The first brewery in America was opened in 1642 in Dan's town of Hoboken.

While there's others, I'll just go onto famous people.

Aside from Mr. Sinatra above, Danny Devito, Les Paul (maker of fine electric guitars), Bud Abbott (of Abbott and Costello), Buzz Aldrin (astronaut), wrestler Kurt Angle, Count Basie (Billy could've told you that), Avery Brooks (actor), Andrew Dice Clay, Bruce Springsteen, etc...
