The DEPO shot is awful. Unless they have changed it around, it makes you gain a lot of weight. That is a huge side effect.

i get awful cramps and the pill didn't help, it actually made my period irregular when it was already regular. i tried a few different kinds and they all sucked. i gained a little weight and i seemed to have more frequent mood swings. but the pill is great for most women i know.
the shot scares me, i think it's unhealthy to stop having your period all together.

i was wondering what types of birth control methods you all use and if you've had any problems with any of the hormonal varieties...
The advantages I saw to Ortho Tri-Cyclen were the diminished acne, cramps and appreciable regularity of the cycle.
The drawbacks for me were that I felt gross & bloated most of the time while I adjusted to the pills (1st 2-3 cycles for me), during the 1st cycle I bled for nearly a month and my already swollen ankles swelled. I was not in shape to begin with, in fact, I had been ill and had lost a lot of weight which made it look like a nearly 30-pound gain for me. I think if you're already in shape you won't have to deal with much weight gain anyway, so Kat you might want to give it a try if your current form doesn't work.
I do not trust the Depo shot. My best friend was taking Depo when she conceived her now 3-year-old daughter. Needless to say, I don't think it works half so well as I would like to believe it does.
Also, a word of caution to women who smoke - hormonal birth control adds to your risk for clotting and heart trouble if you smoke too. When I started my pills (I am no longer on them. . . broke up with the guy I was taking them for) I was also a smoker. I got so scared, I stopped smoking altogether but still felt rotten because the b/f was a smoker and I still worried about clotting.
The risks/benefits are about the same with the pill, Depo and the new Ortho patch, so you may want to ask your doctor (or local Planned Parenthood) for more counselling and advice.

I started taking the pill again this year. I've never had a problem with weight gain from it, but it all depends on the person. The good thing about the pill, is that if you notice weight gain, you can stop and change the pill before too much damage is done.
Depo and Norplant on the other hand are longer term commitments which take more time to wear off. It's a good option for people who are forgetful with the pill, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using them.
An IUD is a more invasive form of birth control, but it doesn't use any drugs which is a plus. It does require check ups every three months, but it is wise for women to go to the gynecologist every three months anyway. It's also cost effective, because most insurance won't pay for the pill. It runs about $480/yr where an IUD will cost you about $300 and will last for about 2 yrs before needing replacement. However, IUD are not recommended for women that haven't had children.
Oh, and if you read all of this, my disclaimer is I've had two children so I'm obviously doing something wrong.

I'm on a low-dosage Pill (Lo-Ovral). I had been on it for years to regulate my period. It worked great but I went off it for a few years to give my body a break (and I subsequently lost 15 lbs without trying).
I went back on it a few months ago. It's just not working well for me. I start having break-thru bleeding around the 15th day that lasts for the rest of the month. Plus, I'm all bloated.
Feh.

Yep, you're very lucky.
Some women don't experience any side-effects.
I'm just inclined to have baaaad reactions to any drug, regardless of whether it's supposed to help or hurt me. For example, the last time I needed a general anaesthetic, I threw up almost immediately after I woke up. . . just lucky, I guess.

this is very true. back in highschool, ironically during my health class, a girl in my class passed out and had a mini-stroke. later we found out it was from her being on the pill and smoking at the same time. the mini stroke wasnt that severe, but it could have been a lot worse.

In regards to hormonal varieties of birth control, the estrogen content is much lower in present day pills which reduces the chance for serious side effects. <P> On a personal note, when one chooses to take a birth control pill and foregoing condoms it is a sign of utimate trust in a person. I was on the pill for several years under the assumption that I was in a monogamous relationship. Later I discovered that my signficant other became involved with someone he met on the internet while still with me. Next time, I will think more carefully about trusting someone again.

I was on it for 4 years straight approximately 6 years ago and even then, no problems. I took 2 years off to give my body a break. In those 2 years I endured 5 -7 day period with heavy bleeding and cramping. I gained a ton of weight too.
