hi hk... i have never understood how or why this happens, and i'm curious. it just seems like a very odd thing for hair to be doing. i would think that anything that was happening would happen at the roots, not at the ends. i'd appreciate any answers you might have..

Q: Why do I have split ends? And how do I get rid of them?

A: Split ends are a result of wear and tear on the hair and
of overdrying and coloring, says NYC hairstylist DJ of the
DJ Rubin Salon. Certain hair types, fine for example, are
also particularly prone to splitting. You cannot mend split
ends; the only way to get rid of them is to have them
snipped off above the split. For women who are wary of
cutting their hair short, DJ recommends getting tiny trims
every four weeks, and following with deep-conditioning
treatments (to keep strands supple and flexible). This type
of maintenance routine should ensure that splits don't crop
up at all.

ends split because most moisture in the hair are in the top of the hair

also they split due to damage of busing, washing, - EVERYDAY wear-n-tear! its important to get at leats a trim every 6 weeks- though most of us dont

if you dont get your hair trimmed often just use conditioner more often and make sure you apply or work most of it down on your ends

ARI - Studying English Common Law cases from the 1700's has been linked to excessive split ends. (The recomended cure is a bar review outline).

Aside from that, split ends are caused by heat (like from blow dryers) and chemicals (like dye and perms). Many products claim to moisturize the hair to such an extent that they prevent split ends. I don't know if any are effective but they might be worth checking out.

Once you have split ends, they cannot be "fixed." The only solution is to get a trim.

And don't study so much. YOu need to have a life too. Put your effort into studying for the bar.

They work like glue and stick the offending ends back together temporarily. Heat-styling and everyday wear-and-tear will result in split ends, unless you are fortunate enough to be able to afford frequent trims. . . or trim your hair yourself.

I used to do that in college.

HK, TORTS textbooks give me split ends. Damned authors from Montana. Grr.
