View Full Version : Clock Math

I do this constantly. I'm not sure if it's an OCD thing, but whenever I look at a digital clock I try and create little equations in my head with whatever the numbers are, e.g.

6:24, I would say 6 - 2 = 4.

Now that's a fairly simple one to handle. Sometimes they get complex though, and I have to fudge it a bit.

10:27 becomes 1 + 0 + 2 = 3
7 - 3 = 4, and there are four digits lit on the clock face.

I do a lot of driving and this helps me to pass the time, but I will admit that it makes me a little happier to be able to find a nice neat solution than getting stuck with a time that I can't wrap up neatly. Am I crazy, or just bored?

but anyway, i think it definitely sounds like an ocd (which i know something about, since i have a few myself). counting and things like that are pretty common ocd's. generally, with those kinds of things, it seems like as long as they dont really mess with your ability to do things in your life, they're relatively harmless.

"Clock Math" is nothing...I usually do it with phone numbers. And I get really crazy with it sometimes. I would give an example but there is no way for me to explain it. It just makes sense in my head...

I do the same thing kind of---I look at liscense plates and try to figure out the average number that the numbers on the plate make up. And then figure out how to make each of the numbers what the average is for example if the plate is:
M735993 they add up to 36 which gives an avg. of 6 and then you average the 9 and 3 to get a six. you average the 5 and 7 and get a six.

i do similiar type of math when driving, but it never seems to be the same type of equations. sometimes i'll take the letter and find out what number that letter is in the alphabet (a=1, b=2) and do math that way. But i do it just to pass time, because in the end i'm not really trying to figure anything out.

I do a similar kind of thing with clocks; not really math, but it's more of a rearranging thing. If the time is 6:24, I will try to figure out every time it could possibly be. In this case, it would be 6:42, 2:46, and 4:26. I've done it for as long as I can remember. It's not really an obsessive compulsive thing, it's just something that I do out of boredom.

This isn't a sign that you're "crazy." Your description clearly demonstrates that OCD is not present. OCD requires (among other things) obsessive thoughts and a compulsion to perform some action in order to allieviate the obsessive thoughts.

You wrote that this math game helps you "pass the time" while driving. You feel "a little happier" when you can win the game, but you're not doing it in order to relieve obsessive thought. Most people who play games of any kind are happier winning than losing.

Note that a person can be obsessive about certain things (like keeping their desk clean) without being OCD or having an obsessive personality.

Good call, Jenn. Now I bet he's doubly embarrassed.

Sometimes when I see a set of numbers I'll add them all up, continually "reducing" them to a single number.

For example, if someone's telephone number was 233-6549, you'd add them up so..

2+3+3+6+5+4+9=32

And then..

3+2=5

For some odd reason, I like the number better if it's reduced to a lower number. One equals good while nine is bad.

Yes, it's stupid and pointless.

blakjeezis, it's definitely OCD. I have OCD too.

Allow me to feed your OCD:

My clock here shows seconds as well. I need to look at the time of the hour, look at the time left in the hour, and take stuff to fill that time.

So it's, let's say, 9:45:57.

I must use:

9:12
0:52
0:59
0:29
0:58

which brings me to 9:57:27.

I have the following that I can use to play with, to use or not use as needed:

0:15
0:12
0:17
0:04
0:05
0:07
0:08
0:03
0:47

QUICK! GET ME TO 10:00:00!

After you do that, take the individual digits and use them for your own brand of OCD:

9:57:27, for example. What clock math magic can you work with that?

Driving mankind mad one mind at a time,

King, you've spoiled my fun and told him that it wasn't OCD.
