I want an accent dammit

After listening to myself on taped plays, i sometimes wish i had some sort of an accent.

Like NY accent makes you sound obnouxious and cranky, while the southern gentleman makes you seem like Robert E. Lee. The redneck accent just makes you inbred.

Dammit, i want an accent! Too bad theres no DC accent............yeah our city sucks

Listen to former Governor Tom Keane (though he sounds like Elmer Fudd sometimes) or the current NJ First Lady . . . it's like nails scratching a chalkboard.

Sometimes, however, I have heard it mimicked as a somewhat Bronx/Brooklyn-type accent. . .the only NJ people I know who talk that way are my mom's cousins - from Guttenberg, NJ.

I wonder if I have an accent. . . hmmm. Voice coaches can help me with that.

yes the D.C. accent is the "anchorman speak". Even my dad, who is from jersey, talks like a newsman now, with an abundance of "yeahs" mixed in there.

p.s. as a 15 year resident of d.c., it does SUCK.

I have cousins in Bergenfield and Haworth that have the most annoying, nasal accents. We left NJ when I was 9, so i just have the weird nasally voice without the accent.

we have a winner! yes the "jersey accent" is the nasally one, where it sounds like you are sort of pinching your nose. i have it myself.

it may not sound to your like you have it, but talk to people from other parts of the country and they will notice.

Not that I noticed.

If you're really worried, tape-record yourself speaking and/or take a few acting classes. Take notes on the things that irk you about the way your voice sounds recorded, which is close to how things sound to others' ears, and make yourself more conscious of them. You may want to take a few acting or singing lessons (I know they're expensive) to help you figure out how to fix them. Even if you can't sing a note, singing lessons can help you with your enunciation and breath control, leading to a more sexy, adult sounding voice.

Or, just buy a copy of The Good Girl's Guide to Bad Girl Sex for lots of tips and tricks to use to develop a sexy voice. . . among other things. :)

only thing i notice when i hear myself on the radio is that i sound like i'm 5. sometimes i give myself a lisp for whatever reason and if im talking to someone with an accent i usualy aquire it.

Voice coaches can help you pitch your voice lower. The book I recommended also has vocal exercises to help you learn to control your voice's pitch when speaking, okay so they're used to make you sound sexier, but it will work no matter what.

my voice is low enough alread, if you just played my voice and compared it to like moes, or some of the other older board members, youd find no real difference in tone.
