View Full Version : Antibacterial products: Are we creating a race of supergerms?

Ok, you have all of these cleaning products, soaps, and hand sanitizers which claim to be anti-bacterial and to kill 99.9% of germs. How about the other 0.01 diesel enough to survive this death goo? When they all get together and do whatever it is germs do, isn't their offspring going to kick our pansy-asses?
Not to mention the fact that we are weakening our own immune systems by killing these germs before we can be exposed to them.
I sense the end is nigh.

Yes.
With all the anitibacterial
products in the world, are
people getting any less
sick? Are they healthier?
Antibacterial products, like
smilies, are for pussies.

damn, you're not letting that one go, huh?
antibacterial stuff is definitely for poohahs. to paraphrase george carlin, you gotta put your immune system to work. a little germ here, a little germ there, never hurt anyone.

ok people, eyes on the prize lets not stray into a discussion comparing a smiley face to a vagina. Now lets talk supergerms.

I don't buy any so-called anti-
bacterial products.
Not only are we creating this race
of supergerms (penecilin went
from a cure-all to completely
ineffective in 70 years), but they
are also weak that they are
barely effective.
Of course, I'm violently ill right
now, so maybe I should
reconsider. Actually, I have a
virus so it don't matter....

The creation of the "supergerms" as you so colorfully put it, is an example of microevolution. Kill the weak (i.e. non-resistant strains) and only the strong (i.e. resistant strains) can survive to reproduce.
It's very frightening b/c the resistent strains are getting harder and harder to kill.

The research that proved this was the case was conducted at my alma mater's Tufts University Medical School.
Triclosan, the usual ingredient became ubiquitous after it was allowed by the FDA to be used and labeled as "antibacterial."
My take is that antibacterial and those alcohol hand gels are just a way for companies to make lots of $$$ on people with OCD and who are germ-phobic in general.

If you want to read about little robots (nanytes in fact) read the novel "Prey" by Michael Crichton. (Sp?)

Thats a new one right? I've read most of his other novels from the mediocre one about the Arab dude and the Vikings to the superb "Congo" and Andromeda Strain.
I refuse to read lost world.

If you haven't already done so, read "Airframe." Preferably not during a flight.

"Congo"
Oh god this was one of his
most boring!! The first 2/3 of
the book was nothing!
Where was the action?
The only thing it is good for
these days is to laugh at the
technology they had (I seem
to recall that Karen ross
had a top of the line
computer with 128 kb of
memory!!)
Andromeda strain creeped
me out so much when I
read it - it was assigned
reading for my 7th grade
english class and I couldn't
believe we actually were
assigned Michael Crichton
for a class!
I still consider him one of
my "guilty pleasures" and
can be caught reading him
on the train from time to
time.

I kind of enjoyed the skull crushing gorillas, but hey, to each his own.
You guys ever read "The Great Train Robbery"? Definitely strays from what Crichton is known for, but a decent read nonetheless.
Anyway...Airframe and Prey. I'll read them, maybe start a thread and we can have our own little book club going on.

Yeah, and that really didn't
happen until the latter half
of the book... the first half
was the fag and his prissy
little girl gorilla... Sorry...
I have read all of Michael
Crichton's books (including
the atrocious Lost World)
except for that one about the
little robots. The Great Train
Robbery was great. I recall
that it spurred me to go an
learn more about it back in
middle school. Do I
remember any of it? No. I
think it took place in
England, right? ;)

It's not what I had expected, considering I had spent the previous week watching old Westerns. . . of course, to discover that the robbery in question took place in England (yes, TooCute, it took place in England; your memory serves you correctly) fascinated me.
I used my dad's copy of A History of the World's Greatest Trials: From Socrates to Eichmann as a resource for more information.
I never thought I'd be interested in "true crime". . . maybe because I was on a Crichton kick? Who knows?
And, sadly, I too have read The Lost World and felt it read like what must have been his notes for Jurassic Park. It frustrated me to no end feeling that way and I almost didn't finish it. But, dinosaurs are my Achilles heel. . . *sigh*

Well my problem with Lost World (and why I refuse to read it) is that it never was meant to be written. It was only written in anticipation of the movie (which I haven't seen either).
