Sorry for the long title. But do you think that the league should dictate to an owner who has paid over $500 million for a franchise that he has to interview a black canidate for a head coaching job? The cowboys may be getting in trouble after hiring parcells because of this, supposedly they contacted Dennis Green but it seems that was more lip service and the league is investigating.
Should Jerry Jones have to interview a dennis green when he clearly wants Parcells there.
I think this sets back the movement for black head coaches, because now some names will be merely a formality so that they can satisfy league rules. I think this may be a step in the wrong direction for Affirmative Action and all the problems it creates.
Now colleges on the other hand are a different story and i think it is shameful that there are only 3 black head coaches in all of Division 1A football (like 130 teams)
What do you think

you contradict yourself, if its right for Professional sports, why isnt it right for college sports? Ive heard many black intellectuals interviewed on Television say that affirmative action is a terrible insult to african americans. "The best man or woman for the job" regardless of their race or religion, is ultimatly the only way to foster equality in society. In order to even out the numbers ( 3 out of 130 coaches for example), the black community would have to rally support for a QUALIFIED person overlooked, and influence the hiring commitee to interview that individual.

Just my opinion.

because in the pros you pay for your franchise and pay with your own money. Colleges receive money from federal, state and local programs as well as financial aid to students. You can threaten colleges by witholding funds and it has long been said that college is ruled by the "ol boy network" which is why you will pretty much see a man on mars before you see an african american coaching somewhere in the SEC

the league rules are a joke. the black candidate becomes a token, and no real progress is made. seriously though, if a coach is bad, he's just bad. it doesnt matter if he's black or white. denny green's a good evaluator of talent, and a good regular season coach. but he bites the big one in the playoffs. ray rhodes just plain sucks.

things have a way of working themselves out. when the team owners are done with the white coaches that STINK, they'll eventually learn to give everyone a chance. the colts had no reservations about hiring dungy, and it wasnt like the jets had to 'settle' for herm.

johnny cochran should just shut the fuck up and stop asking for handouts from the whitey. i'd feel pretty awful right now if i was denny green, knowing full well that jerry jones only called BECAUSE HE HAD TO.

It is pretty stupid. As you said, you plunk down 500 mil for a team, and you want a winner. I really doubt the owners give 2 shits about color. If a coaching candidate is the best fit for your team, you hire them no matter what race, and if he f's up, you fire his ass, no matter what the color.

As for Green, he'll latch on somewhere, though he probably doesn't deserve to (even though he's black); he's not a very good coach.

What the NFL really needs is
more Midget Head Coaches.
Nothing will do more for ratings
and parity than little people in
headsets.

I have to agree with that. I'm old enough (41) to remember when the questions were - Why aren't there more black quarterbacks? Are all the white coaches biased? Funny, but that situation seems to have corrected itself. I'm for affirmative action in a lot of cases but sports are generally a pretty clear meritocracy where achievement is rewarded. <P>

nope.. you hire the best coach for the job... people made a big deal about this shit when Notre Dame hired their coach Willington.. he was a good coach at Stanford and anyone was better that Davie.. by bringing up the person's color you take away from the fact of whether or not they are a good coach... NFL is all about money.. you hire who you think will get you the money...

I have no interest in sports that don't involve hot oil or jello.

Regarding affirmative action in general I think it's an awful idea that hurts those it purports to serve.

The best person for the job should be the only criteria used.

I don't care if they're white, black, blue or neon pink, all I know is that my Bears need a good goddamn coach, and they need him NOW.

And a healthy team.

Please, don't remind me. We've suffered enough.

Herman Douglas brought up an interesting point - the Colts/Jets game was the first playoff game in the history of the NFL to have two black head coaches face off against each other.

Don't forget - there are only 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL.

Every year, there are only 3-4 spots available.

It's not a black/white thing. It's a media-created big deal thing.

Who is complaining more - people in the NFL, or people outside of the NFL?
