Why does everyone but Chairman Kaga get a voice over on Iron Chef?

I'm watching the Mochi battle at 10 on the Food Network, and I just realized that EVERYONE BUT Kaga has an English speaking voice over.

Why is that? Do you think that was one of Kaga's things he wanted if his show was to come to the US? He wanted the people to hear his actual voice?

Just curious. All Pot fuled theories welcome.

I don't know, but i love the fact that they dub the laughter over as well, it sounds so goddamned fantastic, you can actual here the voice over people saying "Ha Ha Ha"

Early episodes had Kaga voiced-over as well. It sounded really weird (since I had seen the later episodes with him in subtitles).

I think the reason they do it is to add to the ''mystique'' of Kaga's character. He's the eccentric millionaire who created the Iron Chefs. So, he doesn't want his voice to be overdubbed with some stupid voice, choosing to remain more aloof...

Just a theory.

i noticed that too the other night. why the hell do the laughs need to be dubbed, its not like they laugh in a different language.

Um....since this is a Chairman Kaga question, here is the definitive answer from RnF Chairman Kaga...

Kaga was originally dubbed (along with everyone else) in the first five or so shows aired the on the Food Network. Only problem is that the dubbing announcer voice for Kaga sounded more like a sportscaster than an eccentric yet dignified Chairman of a Gourmet Academy(albeit with silly clothes).

Since Fuji TV, which supplies the dubbed version to the Food Network, felt that the original voice was inadequate, they opted to subtitle him instead.

Last year, they went back to dubbing for a while, since the actor who plays Kaga (yes he's an actor - I'm the REAL Chairman - in exile) was smart enough to sign a contract where he owned the rights to his voice. During contract renewal negotiations once the show really caught on in the USA, Kaga went back to being dudded temporarily. Thankfully, Kaga agreed to new terms.

Fuji TV also wanted to change the color of his pepper from yellow to green, but Kaga held out, depite a $500,000 offer.

Of course, I think it should always have been his voice, and the fact that he is the only one on the show without dubbing is just so Chairman-esque.

After hearing both dubbed & subtitled, I must say I prefer the subtitles a great deal more. It DOES add to the "mystique" of Kaga.
