Although I'm working right now, I'm starting to look for bigger and better things. One of my new year's resolutions was to bite the bullet, grow up, and be a little more responsible.

I'm heading to a job fair on Wednesday... the last time I went to this, a lot of restaurants were offering management gigs at me, but the main reason I blew them off was because the hours in restaurants suck, unless you're working for a major chain, and even then, they still suck.

I'm happiest when I work by myself and I have a list of things to do and I get them done. I'm not anti-people, but I can get so anal-retentive trying to get a job done that it's either my way or the highway and that rubs people the wrong way.

At least I'm cognizant of that fact.

Besides the want ads and job fairs, where else can you look for a decent job? Monster and Careerbuilder seem like dead ends.

Usually, not being fired from your previous job helps.

I got mine by piss poor luck. God it sucks here.

I temp. Temp agencies give you an opportunity to experience different types of businesses and if you like it, you may inquire about going full time with that particular company. I hate business life, so I never go full time.

Sent in a resume, got called for an interview, about four days later I got it.

I don't think the online stuff works too well, posted my wares there and never got any good responses.
A lot of places today it helps to know someone inside to get you in.

I've always tried to go into every job, including "joe jobs with nametags" I had when I was younger, with the attitude that I was going to try to learn everything I could about the biz, and look for advancement opportunities, and leave once I felt I'd hit the ceiling. I floated around, but it finally paid off. I got an entry level position with a manufacturing plant thru a temp agency, saw a lot of opportunities there so I learned everything I could, worked my ass off and made "Lead" in 3 months, Supervisor in less than a year, and a couple months later I took that experience to a new company and was hired off the street as a manager... all while the people I was initially hired with were still bitching about how bad their job sucked and continued to do as little as they had to in order to stay employed.

It helped that I was interested in what I was doing, but I was at the point in my life that I needed to start making a "career" out of whatever I could.

I totally relate to your "anal retentive" qualities, and I personally don't think that makes you a bad person. It might rub co-workers the wrong way at times, but management is usually only interested in results. It sounds like you've got a good attitude and work ethic anyway, and that will get noticed.

Good Luck!

Aaaaaah!

Mojo scared me.

I got my current job through a headhunter. (Of course, I happen to loathe my job right now, but that's because I am bored to tears.)

The only plus to some job fairs is that they pull headhunter agencies together in one place so you don't have to scan the phonebook for them.

I set up a couple of interviews through HotJobs, Monster and CareerBuilder, but just posting your info is definitely not enough.

It also depends on your degree - some HR officers only read your educational experience before looking at your work experience, leading them to write you off at the get-go.

Reorganize your resume, get a headhunter and don't give up the want-ads. . . even restaurant work isn't a drawback - depending on what you've done, it can show you work well under pressure, have excellent customer service skills and creative problem-solving skills . . . many companies need that kind of attitude. :)

I used to work for a Radiologist with one other girl in his Penthouse apt.

I transcribed for many of the companies that sent him x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, etc.

I was fired, because my co-worker and I didn't get along (she was a bitch and I never hesitated to say so).

One of the companies that I transcribed for noticed the reports looked different and wondered if I was on vacation. They asked my previous employer if I was looking for a position, they called me, offered me a job with a nice raise, benefits (which I didn't have working for Dr. B.) and gave me two weeks to get over the flu.

I've been here more than 2 years and I love it.

I started a business out of necessity, interviewed myself, and hired myself.

The boss and I get along great.

Prior to that, every single good job I got was through contacts. Make a list of everyone you know, and start calling them. Doesn't matter if it makes you feel like an idiot. One of my first good jobs came from the mother of a woman I knew. You just never know where the connections will lead.
