Audio question

Im hooking up a 100K potentiometer to my speakers. Im not sure how many Ohms the speakers put out or the Piece of crap radio I have. When I hooked the potentionmeter up to my speakers, and poted it up and down it was very sensitive, and I couldnt really adjust the volume that much. Oh yea I also tried a 10K POT. and it did the same thing. Do I need a smaller POT? And What the fuck does the K stand for? On the package it says 100K-Ohm. Are Ohms and K's the same thing?
