Heyas all. I was wondering if anyone out there had experience starting a business from scratch. I'm trying to get one off the ground, and my partner and I kinda know what we want to do, but we're both sort of ignorant on the business side of establishing it.

If anyone has advice or info, please contact me either here or privately. Thanks so much.

I started a contracting business in the early 90's, and the best advice I can give you is that if you are entering into one with a partner, be careful and protect yourself. You almost have to think about it like a marriage, and take into consideration what would happen if/when one of you decided to get out. Just like a marriage, no one ever thinks that it will ever end, or end badly, but the sad truth is that most of them do end, and it's rarely amicable when they do.

Other than that, just take your time, stay within your means, and Good Luck!

What type of business are you starting? And, do you know what type of structure you want it to take (corporation, limited partnership, limited liability company, etc.)? Give me some more information (either here or by RF Mail), and I might be able to give you some tips/advice...

Well, I know nothing myself, but I know at my bookstore there's a plethora of start-up books ranging from people who know everything to less than nothing. Yes, there's even "Small Businesses for Dummies".

Whatever happens, I'm wishing you the best of luck...don't forget us little people when you're swimming in wine and women...

The incorporation laws in Delaware are better than those of NY and NJ. Companies can be incorporated in Del without physically being there, and incorporation will help protect your personal property from possible litigation.

(corporation, limited partnership, limited liability company, etc.)
I have no clue what the difference is between any of these.

The Wall Street Journal web site has a special section on how to start a business. I used that info to start my own business about a year ago. They have everything from tax info to business plan models and marketing advice. Good luck. <P>
