So it has come to this. The ironic thing is that if doctors get their way, and their premiums still go up then what will they do next?
Personally I think that this a typical short term 'this will fix it' solution that has more involved than just lawsuit awards. And isn't this a type of extortion?

The site's not working for me. But the government had better threaten doctors as much as they did cops, firemen, and the mta when they mentioned stoppages. If its a matter of public safety that I have to write a certain number of summonses, or that a bus runs its route on schedule, it sure as hell is a matter of public safety that a doctor is on his post when a cardiac victim comes into the E.R.

but doctors are considered private employees, not public servants.

and the article said that all emergencies will be treated, just elective surgery and non-essential care will be turned away.

I don't think this is a bad thing for the doctors to do, and frankly, I can't blame them. No, I'm not a doctor (I don't even play one on TV), but I've heard a lot about the premiums doctors are paying to stay in practice. Lawsuits, not just medial malpractice lawasuits, are out of control in this country, and it costs all of us money. I think they do need to take a stand, and they will still be doing emergency procedures - see quote:

All non-emergency services, such as elective surgery, endoscopies, colonoscopies, and mammograms, would be suspended, according to the memo. Babies would be delivered. It was unclear, however, whether cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy in physician offices, would continue.
