View Full Version : Is There Such a Thing as Being "Big Boned"
Or is just a term to get out of the reality of one's weight?
I mean, what is "big boned" anyway?

Of course. There are "wide-bodied" people with very large frames, wide shoulders, wide hips, big wrists, etc. These people can no more look like Ally McBeal than Ally McBeal could look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Nevertheless, fat is fat. For health reasons, one should strive to maintain a body weight that is appropriate for one's frame,
keeping excess body fat to a minimum.

regardless of how much fat they have going on, you can just see that some people have bigger frames than others. i think this is what people are referring to when they use the phrase "big boned"...

There are people that will never be thin, because they have large frames.
I think people toss the term around too lightly.

To paraphrase Jan Ploog (Author of the puppy book for all you parents out there) "People come in all sizes shapes and colors."
There are many different body types. Some evolved because of their environment. (Short and stocky - like Eskimos for those in very cold environments to preserve heat, and thin and tall - like Africans for those in very hot environments, to disapate heat).
Remember though, that big boned isn't the same as fat. Plenty of big boned people are not fat. Plenty of small boned people are fat (although people in America run towards fat no matter the body type).
If you look at the actuarial tables of recomended weight, there are 3 columns based on body type - small, medium and large boned.
Some charts list recomended weights for body structure (e.g. large body structure) as opposed to bone size (e.g. large boned)

I sure hope so. I have been having a deal with my gut recently as it is not really huge but kind of "there" but if need be and I stand up straight I can hold it in. Anyway, I have been called "big boned" all my life. 6'3" I sure hope I was big boned. I kind of need the big bones to hold me up. Besides, beuaty is in the eye of the beholder, at least I think that is still in effect.

it's like i have a kick stand.
On the bike I rode the kick stand started horizontal and pointed downward 45 degrees when in use.
I hope this does not reflect the direction of your equipment as that would surely dissapoint. :)

well, we have ectomorphs (big people) mesomorphs (medium) and endomorphs (scrawny people like me) human biology dictates that we all fall into one of these groups. but anyone of these can be skinny, or you can be a big fat waste of flesh like billy staples.
If polyamory is wrong... i don't want to be right.

well, we have
ectomorphs (big people)
mesomorphs (medium)
and endomorphs (scrawny
people like me) human
biology dictates that we all
fall into one of these groups
That's not entirely accurate;
ecto/meso/endomorphic
refer I think more to the
proportions of your body
rather than your size; a
short person who was still
long and lean would still be
considered an ectomorph,
while a tall person who
tended to carry their weight
around their
midsection/hips and have
relatively short limbs would
be an endomorph.
And I suspect most people
do not fall squarely into any
one of these categories, but
rather are combinations.

For the record, ectomorphs are on the SMALL side of the spectrum not large.
