Felons can't, why not people who don't contribute anything to society?

Yes. because they're born with the right to vote (assuming they were born here and not naturalized and even then)they've done nothing wrong to warrent the loss of rights.

Felons lost the privilege of
voting because they committed
crimes.
As of now, being poor still
isn't a crime and they should
be able to vote. As for
contributing to society, how
do you define that? Is it
based on one's wealth? I make
alot of money, pay alot of
taxes, but I don't do charity
work or help people. What's my
contribution to society? We
are such a wealthy nation and
it seems that we hate our poor
people.

I say no because they do not contribute to society so they so not have any say in anything, in my opinion.

No according to Plato and his Republic. We are so far from that now it's irrelevant.
Me personnally, citizenship is earned not born into.
On second thought I retract, this is another bottomless beer-soaked arguement I had 10 years ago in college.

I say we don't let them vote but count them as 5/8 of a person for electoral purposes.

And why not anyone just visiting during election time.
And let some people vote under all thier assumed names.
Sure, that's the American way.
People who don't vote are the 1st to complain too! If you were too lazy to get out and vote, Shut your fucking Pie Hole.

i've never really given this much thought, but as my initial reaction, i'd say yes. regardless of their socioeconomic standing, those on welfare are still citizens who will be governed by those elected. it seems that they should have some input into who those people will be.
the analogy drawn between welfare recipients and convicted criminals seems unwarranted. whether or not you like the idea of welfare, it is a legal right that certain people have. criminals, obviously, have done unlawful things against society. it makes sense to disenfranchise one group and not the other

AL DUKES FAN - You realize that only 5 or 6 people will get your reference? Nice!
HECKLER - The majority of those on welfare already cannot vote - they are children. Kids account for the largest percentage of welfare recipients. The vast majority of the remaining welfare recipients are female.
Your argument to preclude those on welfare from voting is predicated upon the statement that people on welfare don't contribute to society.
The contribution made by welfare recipients is that they raise their children and provide some sort of emotional support system.

Define "welfare".
My dad lost his job during the "recession" of the early '90's. He was lifting boxes in Toys 'R' Us in order to pay the phone and electricity bills . . . and, to feed my brothers, sister, cat (who just died) and I, he applied for (and got) food stamps to supplement the food we could get from the local food pantry.
Does this mean he shouldn't have been allowed to vote then? Does this mean he shouldn't vote now? Does this mean that his political voice carries any less weight now because he had to ask the government for help then?
When I hear about abuses of the welfare system, I get angry, because I remember how difficult it was sometimes for my dad to even USE the food stamps at certain stores because the clerks didn't think he was really allowed to use them.

I happen to think it would be very
un-American to deny the
sufferage based on property
status.

People who are on welfare don't or would bother to vote regardless of having the right to or not.

Sure Heckler, only white, male gentleman farmers who own land in Virginia should be able to vote.

Dude, this thread is a little too old-school. ;-)

My God. You're like some kind of beautiful, horrible robot.
And of course they should be able to vote. So should those who serve their time in prison and are released. If you're expected to fully join society again, why is voting taken away from you? Sure, you shouldn't be able to buy a gun and have to keep up with your parole officer and have to get a job, but why the hell shouldn't you be able to vote? There's at least three dozen "rights" I'd snatch away from ex-cons before denying them the right to vote. It just seems so random.

PS I may be experiencing the Chairman's Whoosh phenomenon right now, but shouldn't ADF's fraction have been 3/5?

Nope. 5/8 is correct.
It's in the Constitution; it's been nullified by the Reconstruction amendments, but it's in there.
