Kid in JHS I knew of named Wonderful.
My brother knows this kid with the middle name O. His mom wanted his name to sound Irish. (Patrick O Brown)

Madonna is a pretty name... it seems that first names depend on the last name as to whether they sound good...
Madonna Harris - not too good
Madonna DiCaprio - a better ring to it
something like that...

I'm a big proponent of this theory. I have a sterotypical Italian last name...complete with the normal vowel at the end, even the apostrophe in the beginning. Because of this, I would never saddle my kid with a first name that didn't belong.
A friend of my family has a very similar last name, very Italian, and named their daughter Ceitlin. It might be a pretty name if you're Irish, but it just doen't go with an Italian last name. You might as well name your kid Confused McDago.
Just my two cents.

My brother and sister in law had a daughter. Their surname is Bert‚ (pronounced Ber-tay)

She is called Lucy however.

For me, personally, I've never thought about naming children, as I never planned on having any of my own.
I did, however, have a hand in naming my cousin - Sarah Jane - after my favorite character in a series of books I was reading at the time she was born. But that's pretty normal. :)

I don't have any reason not to believe you, I'd just always thought this was one of those "urban legends".
I first remember reading those names as characters in the Dan Jenkins book, "You Gotta Play Hurt", a pretty good sports book btw, from a sportswriters perspective... but there were a lot of racist characters, and the whole story about how their mother named them deserved an AniDiFranco. They were twin running backs who ended up going to TCU and leading them to a Nat'l Championship. Needless to say, it was a fictional book.

Oh dear God, this thread hurts. It's so hard for a child NOT to be picked on for something. Why would you possibly give a kid a name that will undoubtedly cause others to chuck rocks at him? You can be unique without being ridiculous. I also always hated names where the first name ends with the same letter the last name starts with, like "Jack King". Awkward. Parents seem to put very little thought into what a human being will be called for the rest of his life.

Please, do your child a favor and just name it something vanilla like Jennifer or Johni dont know... while i think that the really gimmicky names suck ass, it also sort of blows to have a super common name. like my friend's name is jennifer, and she always had like 5 other jennifers in all her classes, and her best friend and roommate's name is also jennifer (not to mention that they have the same last name). i think it's nice to have a name that's a little different, but not so much so that it exposes you to ridicule. kids are always going to find something to give the other kids a hard time about... there's no reason to make it easier for them

My brother and his wife are expecting a daughter any day now. Their top two choices for names are ''Reagan'' and ''Elka''. Someone please help me talk some sense into them.

I'm happy to say that cooler heads have prevailed: Kyra Leigh was born at 4:30 pm. Her Aunt Peachy is very relieved. :)

while i think that the really gimmicky names suck ass, it also sort of blows to have a super common name.
Like after the movie Love Story came out, lots of little girls ended up with the name Jennifer.
And, at one time, the most popular name in the WORLD for little boys was any form of MICHAEL. The #2 name was Christopher.
And, yes, some people actually named their sons Elvis.
There used to be a "club" - The Mikes of America - that celebrated the name Michael. I dunno, maybe that's what they feel makes them unique.
As far as the Jennifer/same name (exactly), I grew up with first-cousins whose names were identical. Down to the middle name. We just called them Jen-Pete and Jen-Phil, after their dads.

One of my husband's students is Tiffany Lamarr. I keep saying to take it easy on her grades as she is going to major in pole dancing anyway.
What were her parents thinking?
In my experience, I've never understood naming your child the same as everyone else. My goddaughter is Ashley, when I call to her at school, seven other girls come as well. I have also never met a pretty Linda or a beautiful Bonita. I didn't say you're not out there, I just haven't met you.
My favorite names are Amelia,
Barbara, and Morgan for girls.
Anton, Darius and Vladimir for boys.

not that we'd ever do this, but there are 2 towns on the NYS thruway that my wife and I comment EVERY time we pass - they sound kinda "ethnic" - Ravena and Modena
- we call each other that for about 2 miles (pretty bored by that time in the car so it seems funny at the time)

When naming a child, try to think of every rhyme or everything that it sounds like. I also plan on naming my child something you can't shorten.
yea - like Bart....

we didnt want to hang a real awful/odd first name on my son, so we picked a normal but not that common middle name - so he's
matthew connor
has a nice ring to it.

Thought this Johnny Cash tune is appropriate for this thread.
A Boy Named Sue
My daddy left home when I was three,
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me...
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid,
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me 'Sue'.
Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke,
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk.
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red,
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head.
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named 'Sue'.
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen.
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made me a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars,
And kill that man that give me that awful name.
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town, and my throat was dry.
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me 'Sue'.
Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold,
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do! Now you gonna die!"
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes,
And he went down, but, to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.
I tell ya, I've fought tougher men,
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.
And he said: "Son, this world is rough,
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough,
And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said good-bye.
I knew you'd have to get tough or die,
And it's that name that helped to make you strong."
He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight,
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you 'Sue'."
I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I come away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but sue! I still hate that name!
