View Full Version : Jim Ross and Jerry Lawlers "serious tone"

Does anybody else get really bothered when JR and Lawler go into that very serious tone while doing commentary on a supposed tragic angle? At the 1999 Over the Edge PPV where Owen Hart died , we all saw JR and the King do the best they possibly could do in that horrible situation. We saw them show real, legit emotion during a time when we really needed to be talked though a horrible moment.
Since then, they have used those same tones for fake accidents. Hearing Jerry Lawler say "It doesn't look good at all" after having Owen Hart in his arms is completely understandable. Hearing him say the same thing for Chyna faling on her head in a match against Ivory at Royal Rumble 2001 was tasteless. I bring this up because on Raw this past Monday, we heard it again. When Stacy Keibler got whacked in the head with a chair from Chris Jericho, we heard JR say what a tragic accident it was using the same low and serious tone he used when Owen Hart tragically died in that unfortunate accident. I really think that is tasteless and an insult that they use this tone for angles and say it is "as real as real can be" when it was genuine when Owen died.

I think I remember comentators use that tone when Damien was crushed by Earthquake. It's been used for years. The true downside is that when a real tragedy takes place, their emotions can't be expressed fully just by their words anymore.

They do these fake injuries far too often. But what makes them worse is when they really want to sell it to us, and they come back from commercial & the person is still not even on the backboard, or in the collar. It's just in poor taste.

Go the old-school route, go to commercial, come back all serious, then show us the "during the break footage" on the person going into the ambulance with the whole locker room standing ten feet away & watching, and get back to the friggin' show.

You have too much damn talent on the roster to need to fill 15 minutes by looking at an unconscious body. Not that 15 minutes of Stacey is awful, but unless some clothes are coming off, it does break the flow of the show.

Or they could go the old school route and bring back the big red X that they used to put across the screen whenever someone got bloodied or injured really bad.

I think that ran its' course when they used it last...which I believe was for the time May Young finally succeeded in whipping out her sand-filled tube socks on camera. Now, I think there are just too many mental scars for the viewers associated with the red X, and for once the WWE respects that.

I get the shivers just thinking about it.

I know, I can't even watch when she's on the TV for fear that they'll do something awful with her again. I have to tape it and watch on fast-forward...'cause you know that if she does do something, we're gonna see it replayed 15 times before the night ends.

...ICK!

The announcer's tones have little to do with what's real and what's fake. look at the wrestlers. Test crying like a little schoolgirl bitch (and very badly I might add) was what told me without a doubt the whole thing was a fake. And in wrestling. Who'd a think it?

What do you want from us? We're EVIL! EVIL!!!!!!

I'm tired of Jim Ross using his "Owen voice" all the time. They pull these stupid injury angles so often, it only cheapens things when real injuries DO occur.

As for Stacy's injury, my first thought was, "Stupid injury angle."

And then goddamn Jericho.

Jericho is GOD. He's fantastic. He's such a damn good actor, that for a second there - immediately following his reaction to hitting her, and his first pleas of "It wasn't my fault!" - I thought....Jesus, maybe this is real.

Then Test had to start blubbering, and I remembered - stupid injury angle. Dumb work.

Jericho is still god though. Although if they REALLY wanted to get him over as a heel, they should have had him beat the shit out of Test with the chair immediately following Stacy's "injury".

The only time I remember the big red X was when Outlaw Ron Bass used his spur on Brutus Beefcake.

And I was at the Garden when Mae Flashed. I think I got whip lash from turning away that quick.

But the most upseting thing about this whole thread is that there is some prick watching Raw with Aggie and it isn't me.

I was at that PPV too, and I've never been happier to have really bad seats. But that didn't save me from having to avoid watching it 10 more times in the weeks that followed on WWF television.

They are supposed to treat it
as well... If they are doing a
fake injury what should they
say....WORRY NOT THIS IS JUST
A STORY LINE PEOPLE..... They
zoomed in on her face so you
knew it was fake because
usually when you get hit by a
chair in the face there is
damage....
