I agree with Ron 100% regarding people who root for out of town sports teams.
If it's not your city, it's obvious that most who support out of town teams are not serious fans.
As a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's I saw many people rooting for the Cowboys, Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins and other successful teams because they were winners. Some even said they liked the Cowboys because of the uniforms.
Pathetic. How do out of town fans feel when their teams beat NY teams and those cities mock and hate us?

I think it depends also on reasons as well. I.e. rooting for the Niners because of Joe Montana, or rooting for the Bulls because of Jordan, or liking the uniform. And what sickens me is when they jump to the next hot team, like Bulls fans who are all of a sudden Laker fans.
What really gets me is Giant fans who became Patriot fans because Parcells joined them and the Giants were heading right down the crapper and then all of them became Jet fans once Parcells was hired by the Jets and now I'm sure this area's Cowboy fan community just got a major boost from all the Parcells fans out there. Geez

Even though I've lived here for 14 years, I will NEVER root for the Washington Redskins.

I can see someone ( like myself ), who likes a team just because of a certain player, but a coach ?? I mean, does this guy deserve to have fans ?? So what that he coached his teams to a higher level, but he also royally screwed every team he left. The only thing he ever did that I liked was bringing Curtis Martin to the Jets......but then again, it screwed the Pats. He stinks, and I don't like him.

Up until 1996, I was one of those rare breeds who was a NY Mets fan who did not hate the Yankees. Growing up, Don Mattingly was one of my favorite players. I was cheering for the Yanks during the 1995 and 1996 playoffs. When they won the Series in 96, I was very happy for them. But then all of a sudden everyone became a Yankee fan. They all started getting on me for being a Mets fan. And it really pissed me off. Especially all of those punks who wore the red and yellow hats who didn't even know who Mickey Mantle or Yogi Berra were. So, since then I developed a passionate hatred for the Yankees thanks to all of the bandwagon fans who ruined it for me.

I moved here in '88. Immediately picked up with the Jets and have regretted it ever since. When, God, when will it be our turn?!

I'm not a big sports fan. I like my Yankees, but don't hate the Mets. If I watch a game, I will root NY because it's always exciting in NY when a NY team is successful.

I was always a Viking fan #1, and Giants fan #2. I was elated when the Giants won their first Super Bowl BUT! then I went to a Giant/Viking game at the Meadowlands. The Vikings were leading for 3 quarters but the lost the game. From that point on I've despised the Giants. I respect them as being a hard-nosed football team but wanted them to lose every game on.
I think it was experiencing the humiliation first-hand, with 65,000 people screaming in your ear.
But now the Vikings have made me sour and i haven't followed them since the missed field goal in the NFC Championship game against Atlanta.
I like to see the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Devils, Nets, and Knicks win though.

did you know that the second largest cowboys fan base outside of texas itself is right here in DC?
but besides that, I am a Raiders fan. I have been one since I was 7 years old, and will continue to be one until i die. I started to root for them cause to a little kid, they seemed to be the absolute antithesis of the Washington Redskins, who EVERYONE in my family is a fan of.
I think the mark of a true fan is one who sticks with his team even when they are down. Ive stuck with Oakland through every 4-12 season in the 90's, from jeff george to donald hollas to todd marinovich and vince evans.
Also, since we dont have a baseball team in DC i will root for the red sox since i hate the yankees that much
i am always wary of people who say they are fans of two teams
Oakland Raiders: 13-5
Next: SUPER BOWL XXXVII vs. Tampa!!

You're justified. Mainly because they suck, but you're justified.
Besides, you've got a half-way decent team across the Potomac . . . the Baltimore Ravens . . .

It's all about loyalty. Sure, your hometown teams may suck..does that really matter?
Imagine the great feeling when your team FINALLY wins!
The Bucs have always been the NFL's doormat. Now loyal fans who have suffered with them are getting a payoff. I felt great when the Rangers won the Cup in 1994, I never expected a Ranger Cup in my lifetime, it was incredible!

Go Expos!
I've been an out of town sports fan since I was a small child. I can vividly remember watching the 1973 National League playoffs between the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets with my father, a die hard Mets fan. Pete Rose slid hard into second base to break up a double play and wound up getting into a fistfight with New York shortstop Buddy Harrelson. At that moment, I decided the Reds were going to be my team.
That was 30 years ago, and I'm still with them. I also reasoned that since my dad was a New York Mets and New York Jets fan, I should root for the Cincinnati football team as well.
I sincerely doubt anyone could call a Bengals fan a frontrunner!

The only fans of out of town sports teams that I respect are the ones that move from that town or those who are sired into it.
My Brother in Law's Father has been a huge Bucs fan since their first season. He used to live in Tampa, had season tickets, was an uber fan. They moved up here when my bro in law was 9 and he continued to cheer for them. So just for that, even though they've been up in NY for 20 years, they are die hard Bucs fans. I've known them for 11 years and through them I have a respect for the Bucs even though I'm a Giants fan. I've actually been to more Bucs games in the last 5 years then I've been to Giants' games.
Being from the Bronx I've seen front running fans for every team. Usually it's the same people. It went Cowboys, Niners, Packers and I even saw some Titans fans a few ears ago. This is the biggest joke to me because if you don't live in the team's market at best you might get to see 4 games a year of the team they say their a fan of. That is not being a true blue fan.

For as long as I can remember I've been a Jets, Yankees and UCONN Men's basketball fan. I have never been a big fan of the Bucs, but, that being said, I will be on my couch rooting for them to gut the Raiders this weekend. Not because I'm a bandwagon jumper, simply because of my blind hatred for Oakland.

I thought about becoming a Ravens fan when the franchise started up. I really have no favorite football team. I was a Cowboys fan as a kid but that was during the days of Staubach, Dorsett and Too Tall Jones.
For as long as I can remember I've been a...UCONN Men's basketball fan.
PLEASE tell me that means you've been a fan since before 1990. I can't stand these so-called "die-hard" UCONN fans back home in CT who suddenly emerged after the 1990 Elite Eight season (when Tate George hit the game-winning shot against Clemson). If you don't know who Chuck Aleksinas, Corny Thompson, Earl Kelly, or Dom Perno are then you are NOT a die-hard fan.

I was born and raised in NJ.I'm 10 minutes from Giant Stadium.I LOVE the Dolphins.Guys always ask me why?Because of Dan Marino?I became fin fan in 1969.Dan was born Sept. 15th 1961..He was crapping his diaper when I became a fan.It was Csonka, Griese, Kiick, Buoniconti and Morris.I guess my dad, who was a Jet fan, turned me on to them.
