The best person to contact now is David Hinckley at the daily news. Let him know how much we miss him, maybe he'll write a nice article. POUND his office with letters and emails. Let the city know how much we loved them. It won't save them, but at least it will honor them.

Someone post his contact info. NO personal info, just professional contacts.

Jeff

Folks, do NOT bombard the media. They do not like it. And if they don't like it, there's no fucking way they will ever, and I mean EVER, write a positive article.

I work for a magazine, I know from experience. You fuck with them, they will fuck you back twice as hard.

I just wrote a letter to him and I'm not sure if it's any good. It's a little long, especially compared to the usual size of his article. I posted it here to see if you all thought it was any good or not. I'd love to hear what you think. To David Hinckley, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about an evening comedy team that was unlike anyone else out there in many ways. Unfortunately, as I write this, it is after having discovered that this radio show is moving out of town. Of course I'm talking about the Ron and Fez show, which as of today (1/27/03) is leaving New York and going to D.C. Presently there are also thousands if not tens of thousands of Ron & Fez fans that are completely distraught because we know that we've just lost something extremely special. I realize that at this point I probably sound like an obsessed fan with nothing else on my mind, but let me assure you that is not the case at all. In the past few years that R&F have been in New York, they have developed an extremely loyal audience who would follow their show wherever it was (any fan of the show could tell you that R&F worked nearly every shift at WNEW) and would always call the show with jokes, comments and observations that just made the show better. This is a very interactive show. However, it went beyond that: Ron and Fez became our friends! They went out with us to some great parties, we came to the studio and got to become a part of the show, which is an experience that you'll never forget. They never asked for anything in return either (although a nice cigar for Ron or a bag of Oreos for Fez was always appreciated). Aside from the hilarity that we received from them night after night free of charge, they also delivered a level of class and integrity that isn't common in many broadcasters. The best example; September 11, 2001. During and after that horrific day, instead of trying to become a political type of show or just play the news on TV, they went through each night with us feeling the same shock and sadness that we all felt. They opened up the phone lines for the callers to talk, yell, and cry, whatever. The show that night was what it has always been about; the people that they were doing the shows for. The communities of fans who flock to Ronandfez.net every single day to discuss all types of topics ranging from the show to things having nothing to do with the show. It's a very communal experience. Now, when it started to become more and more likely that the Ron & Fez show would be leaving us, that was the call to action! We were formulating ways on ronandfez.net to get the company (Infinity Broadcasting) and the people running the station to take notice of our wants. There were numerous letter-writing campaigns asking that even if the station were to switch formats (which it has), that they would still keep the Ron & Fez show for the loyal audience that it has. We feel that you can keep a show that people are responding to and change your music formats (you might of heard of a station that is doing just that with a morning deejay named Howard Stern). We mailed out hundreds of thousands of letters and even had a plane with a banner pledging our love for the show fly around New York. However, in the end, it apparently wasn't enough for the audience to tell the company what we wanted to listen to and now we've lost our buddies. I think that many would have to agree that there are very few shows on the radio these days that really connect with their audience o

David Hinkley is a stand up guy and an influential radio reporter. If we all try and write substantial emails to him, he might continue to cover our campaign to bring Ron and Fez back. Today he mentined it, calling it "spirited."

Mr. Hinckley, Just wanted to let you know that the New York has lost a unique edge in radio. With the loss of Ron and Fez spontaneous humor has taken a back seat to pre-planned listen lists. The listeners will suffer for it. No talk show was better after the trade center tragedy and no radio show tried to promote activity and commerce in the city afterward as Ron and Fez. Once again the public feels the pain. Thank you,

Maybe one day they will return.

How wonderful that listeners are writing intelligent letters to Mr. H. I agree that the best approach is not to flood, but rather to be succinct and clear. the press is VERY powerful!

You're right. R&F aren't "hot talk" in the O&A sense. I guess I was thinking that they're different from traditional AM talk (Bob Grant, etc.), so they'd be unlikely to show up on a WABC. The Chick's ratings are pretty much flat, and while I have no indication Q is unhappy with her, that always leaves open the possibility for change. Of course, R&F are with Infinity and Q is a Clear Channel station, so it's not something where they could just be dropped in.

WNEW certainly is the slowest moving station in the city, and has been for years. That probably explains some of their ratings.

Best,
David

David -

Thanks for your reply. I don't know if I would classify the Ron & Fez Show as hot talk, but rather a comedy talk show. I think that if any other station decides to part with a redundant 4 hours of music and picks up Ron & Fez, they will find that they will have a successful and profitable show
on their hands.

Q104.3 obviously holds the Radio Chick in some regard, and although that show does not appeal to me, I would imagine that they are successful. Whatever the future holds, it is still odd that it took WNEW half a year to make any move.

David -

On Monday, New York lost two talented radio personalities ? Ron Bennington and Fez Marie Whatley. You can call it a cult-following, but they were entertainers extraordinaire; a mix of now, then, what used to be and what never was. The behavior of a major radio station, located in The major market, and owned by a major company, is puzzling. Why wait nearly 6 months to make a format change? No matter, time will tell, and perhaps the new format will attract the new demographic, and make for some non-controversial profit.

However, NY radio is now at an all-time low. Opie & Anthony, a widely popular and financially successful show, is long gone. Ron & Fez - never commercially acclaimed, but yet a success in their own right - has been cancelled after a slow lingering death.

In radio, one letter equals hundreds behind it - the many others who do not take the time to formally voice their comments.

There are hundreds of us out there.

But alas, the numbers prove to be too little.

We will all miss listening to quality entertainment on New York radio.

Bunny

I love them both.

I wrote to David Hinckley late last night and got a response from him this morning. I just assumed that he had one response that he was giving all of us R & F fans, but after reading everyone else's posts, it's great to see that he is responding individually to everyone. Here's is his response to me...

Thanks for the e-mail. I've been impressed both by the numbers and the articulate tone of R&F listeners. It will be interesting to see what WNEW does next, and I suspect it's not out of the question that they or someone else will at some point bring R&F back to NY.

Hey guys...first time poster, long time listener. I've done the letter writing, emailing, krock request, and phone calls. I think we need a leader and a focused effort...it just seems we are all over the place. I do think the add in the paper is a great idea!! Here's my letter to David Hinckley:

Thank you in advance for your time Mr. Hinckley.

I wish I could come remotely close to articulating the grief I feel that Ron &Fez are off the air in N.Y. Instead of trying to do those feelings justice, I've decided to try and take a more productive approach. I've been visiting the R & F website and speaking with fellow listeners, and we all want to do something that might help, we just don't know how to go about it. Writing letters and emails is probably not a bad idea, but, who should we be writing to? Has a focused fan base ever "saved" a host(s), format, or radio station? I would
definitely appreciate a suggestion.

Unfortunately, stations rarely change their immediate plans because of
listener campaigns. But it plants a seed, and either that station or
another station may keep those hosts in mind down the road. So it may
seem frustrating at first, but it never hurts. Sorry I don't have a
more
promising immediate suggestion.

David

Isaw your message you sent to me Jeff and I sent my e-mail right away. Here take a look at what I said:
I know 'NEW will change their format and that Ron and Fez are gone but I want them to be honored in a special way.I think they deserve to be remembered because they were more than just pranksters or comics, they were our friends, the guys we put on when we got home from work tired. This show will go down in history as one of the best shows ever, not only because of it's ability to brighten up a day but to bring a whole new meaning to the word funny. The WNEW made a huge mistake by letting them go and i think they should at least be remembered with a column.I mean it's the least we Ron and Fez fans can ask for.

Thank You Very Much Mr.Hinckley,

Subject: Ron and Fez

Dear Mr. Hinkley:

I'd just like to express how heartbroken I am at the loss of Ron and Fez in New York. I'm a 38 year old man from New Jersey with a wife and a son who should probably not be concerned with things like this, but I am.

Having been a listener to radio in New York for over 30 years, I can't say that there has been a radio (or television) show that has been anywhere near as entertaining, endearing, or downright hilarious as the Ron and Fez show. The rapport they developed with their listeners reaches deep and I sincerely feel like I have lost two very close friends in their leaving. We, their fans, have followed them through mid-days, afternoons, nights and overnights. Through it all, they remained completely professional, totally natural, and very entertaining.

It was all too good to be true though - too many people having way too much fun and laughing way too much.

I am simply glad to have been part of one of the most amazing radio shows I have ever heard.

Who knows what the future holds for New York and Ron and Fez? I find it hard to believe that some other station won't pick them up.

Mr. Hinkley, thanks for reading this. I really just wanted to tell you that we, their fans, love Ron and Fez. We'll really miss them.

Sincerely,

Mike Cxxx
