Ironically, those radio personalities that OnA hated are still on the air, while OnA's friends of the show are off. Let's see - Howard Stern, Don & Mike (in D.C. and still in Philly), and Leslie Gold/Radio Chick on 104.3.

Now how are OnA's friends doing? Ron and Fez - off the air. Eddie Trunk - off the air. Ferrall - off the air in NYC, lost in some nothing radio station out there.

Perhaps OnA are indeed Radio Cancer, if not Radio AIDS (as some say of Don & Mike).

And perhaps OnA were also too dumb (or more likely, too arrogant) to see the fascist/religious zealotry direction that this country is going to have tamed/toned down their show. Less entertaining, but also less controverial.

Well, Anthony DOES have a point.

All people who showed any sort of loyalty to O&A have been removed or relocated while their enemies pretty much remain unchanged.

I'm not sure if there was really a conscious effort to remover O&A's buddys, but it is unfortunate.

It's probably just that Ferall had no ratings, Ron and Fez have been fearing this day since the O&A show was taken away, and Eddie Trunk was pretty expendable too.

Just a note, lets see doing zero ratings while trying to keep the Titanic from breaking apart and being rewarded for their efforts by being able to stay on a successfull station in a different market where they actually ARE being listened to. I don't know but it looks like you can give Ron and Fez a check in the winners column here.

Ferrall was due to be axed anyway, the guy is a drifter in the business, frankly I'm shocked Infinity gave him the chance at WNEW after he ditched a second chance on WFAN for 1050ESPN and ditched ESPN for his WNEW gig.

Trunk's release just happens any time formats change. I'm sure many were surprised he lasted this long after the flip to talk. Shame yes but he should land on his feet in NY, if not some where in this country will pick him up, so like R&F he is walking away a winner in this mess.

D&M and Lykis are popular syndicated shows (how or why I still can not fathom) so being trashed and thrown off NY probably doesn't faze them (Lykis probably doesn't care, I guess Don and Mike just look at it as something that wasn't meant to be) Stern is becoming more and more like Don Imus every day its scary, pretty soon he will be irrelevant, but he wouldn't be going anywhere wheither or not WNEW remained a talk station or not. And finally I wouldn't exactly say the Chick is "thriving" on Q104 Desperate for attention she is pulling out forced tricks (that billboard) and forcing herself to be controversial its ridiculous. I doubt she'll last beyond the spring books here in New York.

So its not as bleak as you might say as O&A's friends R&F and Eddie Trunk come away with a winning hand (well so far R&F are) Stern, D&M and Lykis are basically at square one before O&A came to NY breaking even and Leslie Gold is on the verge of being synoara on NY radio.

But thats my take on the whole thing.

The station had awful ratings overall, but don't forget that the ratings are also averaged for the whole station. If 70% of the day is pulling a .2(Neer, Lykis, Letterman, etc.) then the other 30% must be pulling a LOT higher numbers to compensate.

In case you didn't notice, the amount of national sponsers advertising on the Ron and Fez show went UP after the last trend. Something was doing all right.

Hence they are still employees of Infintiy Radio. But right now they have a show and are very much a comodity for Infinty Broadcasting. They are definatly winners in this mess.

I don't care about the "millions" OnA are supposedly raking in unemployed, nor do I care about how much money they may have pulled in for Infinity, nor were the ratings or books of OnA and Ron and Fez important to me.

More important, I enjoyed and valued the entertainment of OnA and Ron and Fez's shows. But this incessant fighting between shows and the division of OnA "friends" from OnA "enemies" reduced the entertainment (although some of the comments and the cringe radio were funny, such as Ron's fake anti-Eddie Trunk rants on March 5, 2002).

Also, this "OnA always win in the end" view and the attitude of pulling down other radio personalities and shows (Don and Mike and the Radio Chick) are poisonous.

Don't you see - all this non-entertainment bickering gave Infinity an EXTRA reason to remove OnA and also to change the format. Mindless radio DJs playing the same songs over and over are less troublesome to the suits.

It wasn't just the ratings that did in OnA, Don and Mike, and the whole WNEW talk format. Ratings can recover (and were after 9/11).

But all the intra-station infighting between OnA and Don and Mike, and the across-the-radio spectrum insults to Howard Stern (Mr. 800 Pound Radio Gorilla of Infinity) surely didn't sit well with management.

So the St. Patrick's mess and S4S3 were the proverbial stray on management's back. Hey, religious nuts threatening WNEW's FCC license, and management would fire their mothers.

And you, yeah YOU, the zealous fans just keep fighting instead of, oh, maybe promoting the shows more and buying WNEW junk.

You did what you could, with this board and with attending Ron and Fez parties, despite WNEW's lack of promotion budget.

But the positive feedback to Infinity, the petitions, and the airplane banner were just too late (sorry to say, but face it).

Ron and Fez should have found sponsors larger than the Hard Rock Cafe for the fan events. And more Ron and Fez-related trickets besides the free Big Ass Cards (if you received yours), for the fans to purchase, to fill WNEWs coffers, or at least offset Ron and Fez's show expenses.

So, keep ranting how OnA always win, and how Ron and Fez are still on (in D.C.). If it makes you all feel better about yourselves, rant away.

But my radio just can't pick up WJFK or WYSP (see related post on Short Wave Radio and FM limitations). So thanks for nothing for your infighting.

in the begining the english did well in our revolutionary war and the south did well in our civil war as well. in the end it was goodness that over came evil. the church of evil kid touchers will not win in the end. of all the so called o & a enemies, only chick (funny how she changed her mind about am drive (or dive if you judge by her format)) and radio edit play really well to city/suburbs. the rest of the enemies are popular in areas where they share the family tooth. when o & a come back i'll bet they lobby for ron and fez because they do get it. <P>

Their (O/A) show was the way they felt, something missing from the PC world of today. What you call poison, I call classic radio which I couldn't agree with more and loved. Personally, I wish R/F took a harder stance in the D/M conflict. If you put the choice on the table, they would admit that D/M aren't funny and that O/A were. As for Stern, he has done the same thing with Imus and others, why hasn't he been fired? It wasn't the in-fighting that took them out, it was that they brought back heterosexual relationships back to the church and Infinity blinked. O/A catching on like it did gave the station some life after years of shit, so as low as the ratings were in this multilingual market, they did raise them and cause the whole channel to change formats, TWICE!
The boys only fucked with those who fucked with them. They never liked love line, yet Adam and Drew never blamed them for shit ratings or tried to take their time slot. They both will be back and I hope you don't listen. The fact that you have the date of the "eddie trunk" jokes in your head truly scares me.

It wasn't about merchandising, the boys were friends of Johnny at the Hard Rock (a great venue) and put together some great events that had a small town feel. The station itself balked at getting sponsors, air talent have a show to worry about. And just how much show expense do you think they needed to offset? Remember, with radio shows, you have to remember that a good 50-75% of the fans are mindless sheep who will cast their vote only for whatever or whoever their radio "hero" endorses or doesn't slam. D&M and O&A fighting against Stern is one thing...but when the shows on a single station start fighting, and it throws the ratings and schedule into chaos, it's simply retarded. I loved the radio wars. it got nasty and it was great radio! everyone loves a little confrontation as entertainment, and thats what OnA did. When D&M were taken off of WNEW sure, the ratings did suffer, but things would have evened out due to US, yes US the fans.

its funny how so many loved opie for what he did and yet the same people hate him now for it. Opie is a dick, and real asshole, but thats why we love him! him berating and degrating people is what we tuned in to hear. so he took it to D&M, it was going to happen soner or later.

Mods have a tough job cleaning up the messes on a board where too many people create threads just to do so. And post nonsense over and over again. Like our friend Mr. Black. Even if the thread is a dup, the content may drive it forward more so then the original. Plus they all seem to grow their own way.
