Is D.C. considered "the south"

I've always wondered if the people of Washington D.C. considered themselves Northeners or Southeners. Can you guys help me out?

Definately Northerners. BUT, it's a weird feeling city since you have so much of the support staff of politicians living around there, and it's a homogenized midwestern feel as much as anything. Just ripe with pathetic strip malls and chain eateries and stores in the outlanding VA and Maryland suburbs. I think it's the northern city that southerners feel comfortable in. Now if you go one major city to the south(Richmond I believe is next city of circumstance), you are DEFINATELY in the south. And if you go one city to the North(Baltimore), you can feel the final fringes of southernalty.
DC is definately North, but barely.

yeah, dc was burned by the south, so it's definately a "northern" stronghold. Though it was always kinda in the middle, both geographically and politically. The Compromise of 1850 made slave trading in DC illegal(to make the north happy) but congress promised not to abolish slavery itself within DC (to appease the south).

I've been a DC Metro Resident for 24 years. DC is not in the South. Alot of us DC Metro residents think the south starts in Prince William County in VA. The county line from DC is like 30 miles. Once you cross over that county line, people start to have Southern Accents, and have more missing teeth. <P>

Northern Virginia and southern maryland, the area the station broadcasts, doesn't have an accent. It's strange but if you've lived here you don't have an accent.
That being said Southern Va is hyper hick, and Balteemore has the single most annoy accent.

Lifestyle we are extremely northern, but technically we are in the south.

Most people who are from DC
do not consider DC "the south"
- however most people who live
here (it seems) are not
originally from here.

Not only is Northern Virginia
actually one of the most
afluent areas in the country
(I think the average income is
over 60K and that it's against
the law not to have a Lexus),
but the biggest 'necks I've
ever met were as far north as
you can go in Maine, and there
are MANY places further north
that I would consider more
racists than here in the DC
area.

I always roll my eyes when I
hear Artie on Stern's show go
into the racist southern
stereotypes whenever someone
with an accent call - then I
hear some of the callers and
some of shit they spew.

Boston and Northern California
are two of the most racist
places I've ever been, and
neither are below the Mason
Dixon line.

DC is on the dividing line between the Union North and the Confederate South. Back then DC residents didn't run the city so there wasn't anybody to even say whether they were quitting the Union or not. There are differing loyalties among the area residents. Some civil war battles were fought in Bull Run, about 15 miles from WJFK, where R&F are moving to.

Look, the area where R&F are cannot really be considered "southern". Trust me, there are rednecks everywhere in the country, here included, but the difference between northern VA and the rest of the state is insane...WJFK's range is pretty far, a good 45 minutes to an hour west and south, and that gets you into bumpkin-ville...

But THIS area, the immediate broadcasting area, northern VA and DC, is as yuppie as they come...

DC is really the Exact middle of the country. The Mason Dixon line bassically ends at DC and goes west. Thats also why theres a west Virginia. WVA didnt want to b par tof the south so there area of VA succedded to the north. +DC is way to Urban to be in the south.
