I NEVER understood why people drink their problems away ... or numb themselves with drugs. To me, it seemed pointless.

I smoked 3 puffs from my first joint in May { hated it ... burn my lungs so bad }, and had my first alcoholic drink at the RnF Cruel Circus. Gee, I could be "straight-edge" ... LOL :-)

But now with the loss of my Mom, I can now understand why. Not facing reality ... trying to numb it all away.

I AM NOT SAYING I AM STARTING TO DRINK OR DO DRUGS NOW ... I won't allow myself to do that. A family member of mine is an alcoholic, and it makes me so mad! Wasting his life with the bottle!

I am so luck to have you guys in my life. The ones who are keeping in touch with me, and seeing how I am!

Christy, I know what you mean. It's very difficult, and having the occaisional drink or smoke isn't the end of the world. Especially if it helps take the edge off a little. I don't smoke anymore, but I do have my drinks from time to time.

Keep in mind not to let it get out of hand though, its understandable considering what just happened with your mom and all. But remember to stay focused and healthy.

In total, a double Manhattan and Virgil's off-the-porch-ice-tea (that roughly equals about 8 shots, or right around where my buzz threshold begins).

To me, it's o'kay to drink as part of a good time, or even if it helps in having a good time.... but not in order to have a good time.

That said, I've been known to have a few at the end of a particularly fucked up day, but whatever it is that's getting you down is still gonna be waiting for you in the morning.

If what you're saying is that you're depressed then that's a normal thing to be feeling. I think that you should also recognize that the feeling will go away at some point. Opening up to your friends, family, or a therapist may help that to gradually happen. After my loss it took a long time to figure out how to deal with what I was feeling. I put in a lot of effort to remember and write down good memories and collect letters and knickknacks that evoked them. I also like to think that the loved ones I've lost are still with me as part of conscience ... that's kept me mostly focused on school and work and away from boozing and risky behavior.

Maybe you should give yourself a schedule...like a to-do list. Just try to keep yourself occupied just to prevent yourself from getting bored. That's when you start to think about things, then you're telling yourself "Well, since I have nothing else to do...maybe a glass of wine or two (or 5 like some people I know!)won't hurt me that bad because I'll just fall asleep."
Just keep yourself busy and always make sure you have people around who are there to listen.
Maybe you should try volunteering?
Daycare center?
YMCA?
...just something exciting, youthful and rewarding. Just nothing that can bring you down.
