I was reading January's edition of Rolling Stone and here are some of her comments on today's music. (Do you agree or disagree?)

Q. You have made it clear that you are not thrilled with music today.

A. You've got all these assorted divas, like these sappy, romantic singers. They are not tender like Nat "King" Cole - they are overwrought. And it's very flashy, but it's soulless. You look into the eyes of these people, and you know they are looking at themselves in the mirror. There is nothing to them but their own image. There's just nothing....

We are drowning in images. We don't know fantasy from reality. Especially the generation coming up. Something happened. Anything that is accessible becomes disposable: You sit in your living room and you drink your cola and you eat your pizza, and you just watch all of this, you know, pornorgraphy. It's not even music.

I agree, although I don't know if I'd put it quite like that, and I feel that there are exceptions, but they're few and far between

In my opinion, I think what Joni was probably referring to in the article was the ever present "bling-bling" artists who sing only about their self-absorption.

Who is Joni Mitchell

She recently put out an album called "Travelogue".

She is a Canadian with a beautiful voice. I guess her most famous song is "Help Me"....I think I am falling in love again.
When I get that crazy feeling, I know
I'm in trouble again...."

From a website devoted to her:
She is a songwriter, singer, musician, poet and painter. Her output of 21 albums over 30-plus years is widely regarded as one of the most significant and consistent collections of work by any artist of her generation. Her unique interpretation of divergent styles creates an intriguing, often unclassifiable musical landscape, captivating music lovers and keeping pundits guessing.

She has made appearances and contributions to albums produced by James Taylor, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, Darhyl Hall, Janet Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Roger Waters.

Joni has a seemingly endless supply of creative energy; her melodies surprise and delight, her lyrics are often downright brilliant. Her voice is an ever-evolving instrument touching many emotional bases, and her reservoir of over 50 guitar tunings makes her a rare bird as a guitarist and composer of music.

Singer-songwriters as different as Tori Amos, Seal, Annie Lennox and Prince cite Joni as an influence; Other respected artists such as Sarah Mclachlan and Shawn Colvin have also been inspired by her music.

Isn't that kinda like Bert Convy talking about todays commedians? The truth of the matter is that just like in previous times, there's great music being made, you've just got to look for it.
