View Full Version : Why Are There Very Few "Liberal" Radio Shows
I mean we have plenty of Bob Grants and Rush Limbaughs! Why aren't liberal radio shows more popular? (I don't mean liberal in the sense of being a comedy show.)
I consider WBAI liberal, but the show is publicly sponsored.

Because ALL media are controlled by MONEY, and unfortunatlly most big money is republican.
Also FCC has very republican/conservative tendencies (to put it lightly)...

Could it be that our society is so liberal that conservative radio is considered shocking?

Liberals have their own radio stations. They are called "NPR".

Combative personalities tend to "make better radio". Liberals (count me as one) tend to be more tolerant of differing opinions and it comes off as being "soft".

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Holy shit! Wow, that dropped me. Liberals have all major broadcast networks, two cable networks, and a majority of the newspapers. They're so tolerant of others' opinions, yet they can't handle the fact that anyone else's views should be heard on the airwaves.

NBC is owned by GE, CBS by the Viacom conglomerate, and ABC by multi-corp Disney. These aren't exactly pillars of liberal society. and don't think that they don't use they media influence to further their other businesses because I saw it first-hand. I helped to fight for the dredging of the hudson several years back. GE waged one of the dirtiest campaigns ever, forcing a blackout of the coverage on all NBC networks, playing commercials against dredging on NBC networks and affiliated radio, and gernally putting pressure on local towns. Media is business, and business has no politics other than the buck.

The last commercial "Liberal" station in NY was WEVD, 1050, now ESPN Radio. They tried with hosts like Bill Mazer, Sam Greenfield and Alan Colmes. They would have had better ratings if they yelled out of the studio windows.
The only "Liberal" station is WLIB on AM, the "angry black station" where Sharpton is a regular fixture and sadly, a hero.

Because you could exhaust all liberal topics in 15 minutes or less, and then you'd be forced to play repeats. Here are the themes:
1) White men are the source of all evil in the world.
2) If you're not a white man, you are a victim of them, and deserve to exact endless revenge for the suffering they've caused you.
3) I need more of your money to fund more programs to make your life better, because I am secretly superior to you and can run your life better than you can.
That about sums it up.

ANY format that makes money would be on the air. It just seems that hosts like Rush and Hannity preach a populist gimmick and get people riled up. Radio is show business and money is what matters. BTW, Ron Kuby is a good listen in the mornings on WABC, he's a Communist.

Oh, and I was just kidding Coco. I know you wouldn't be a tool of the Liberal scumbags.
But I must say Heclker that there really isn't that much of a GIMMICK involved with Rush or Hannity in my opinion. MAYBE back when Rush was trying to get as popular as he has now. They don't do bits or skits. I've heard parody songs they've found or were mailed and played, but it's pretty much just thier opinions on topics of the day from their Conservative standpoint. And it's a majority of Americans agreeing with them and tuning it to get their opinions that make the shows work.

SOrry Mojo, but it is INDEED people who agree with them tuning in. There's only so much you can atribute to the BUZZ created around a show so new people tune in to hear it. These shows have a big core fanbase.
And I don't know about you, but Donahue is a VERY LIBERAL show on TV. I know it's there and it must be pulling OK nimbers at least to stay on the air. But I don't watch it. I refuse to tune in because I disagree with him points of view and horrible interviewing skills.
So I ask you, why do YOU think people tune into conservative talk if it's NOT because they agree with and value the opinions and analyisis of the hosts?

Moe, you don't get what I'm saying. For the most part, the people that tune into liberal talk shows are liberals and conservative talk shows are conservative. Of course, there are always those who just tune in because they almost like getting mad at what's said and want to hear what's next...
But just because these kinds of shows get large ratings doesn't mean they have the "majority of Americans" in the country agreeing with them. It means they have the majority of the radio listening audience at the time probably agreeing with them. There's a big difference.

Very true. Liberals dont necessarily own the networks, but the news departments are the ones who make the calls on what and what doesnt get on air. Rather, Brokaw, Jennings, all liberals. People are getting tired of only one side being presented.
Fact of the matter is, for some reason, its cool right now to be conservative. Why do you think FOX News Channel is #1?

Why do you think FOX News Channel is #1?
Because they are the WORST offenders of what ALL American news programs try and do, local or otherwise...and that's SCARE THE SHIT OUT OF YOU. I actually enjoy what little straight news reporting there is on Fox (Broadcasters making snide little comments don't count...that's editorializing, and Fox is just as guilty of it as MSNBC and CNN), but it's boxed-in by graphics, music, and smarmy, yammering talking heads that would make the WWE look subtle. And EVERY commercial breaker HAS to be about something that "JUST MIGHT KILL YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN." Studies over the last 20 years have shown the most effective ratings grabber for news programs is to, quite simply, scare the viewer into watching. Fox News does this better than anyone else. Settle down, dammit. Give me my news, not a smackdown.
It's BBC News for me, man...

The scary thing is, so many people beleive what they read and / or hear. They hear someone talking on the radio about a topic, and not realizing it's so hideously skewered to one side, they're easily brainwashed into beleiving "that's how it is"

As for network tv....FOX seems to be the only one who at least presents both sides of a story. "We report, you decide." Thats why they are #1. People were getting sick of hearing the liberal side all the time.

Excuse me, but wasnt it the democrats that led the witch hunt in the 80's? PMRC? Tipper and Al Gore?
*sigh* I'm so sick of this tired rhetoric about the Gores and the PMRC. The PMRC was ridiculous, perpetuated by a bunch of old, out of touch people who heard a word in music, like "suicide," and called it Evil... Yes, Tipper started it, and she started it in response to the rampant trend of complete disrespect toward women by rap groups like 2 Live Crew, (which is , by itself, a typically liberal principle. it spiraled out of control once the church got involved - big surprise) but Al Gore had nothing to do with it, and Tipper dissasociated herself from the organization when her husband was chosen for the Clinton ticket.
The PMRC has always thrived on republican support, was given power by republican senators and is given teeth by conservative-valued stores like Wal-mart refusing to carry music "Branded" by the PMRC. Since Tipper left, the PMRC has had ties to Bob Dole and other Republican mainstays. Please stop kidding yourself...

Now I understand how CNN itself ican be seen as "liberal"...it's just as leftist as Fox is to the right. And Fox IS well over into the right, because where are else are you going to go when you want to be seen so badly as the opposite of the "other network"?
But what about Headline News? I flip between CNN, Fox and MSNBC pretty reguarly, but outside of BBC News, the only one I watch with real consistency is Headline News...and that's just because it's pretty much 24 hours of people READING THE NEWS. No talking heads, no pundits, no talk shows...NEWS. Man, what a crazy concept, I know...BUT IT JUST MIGHT WORK.
