I passed out at Subway.....

Hey Hordeking,

Enjoying a great two day vacation from school, i got to get some much needed rest and sleep in till 1pm today.

I woke up, took my ADD med (dexidrine), and headed off with some friends to look at some new hockey skates. It was about 3 oclock we decided to grab some food.

I walk into the subway, and place my order. While they started making the sub, I started to feel a bit dizzy, and sat down. I got up to pay and things turned a bit hazy, it was almost as if i lost a sense to see color and everything went gray. I payed, grabed my drink cup and thought id just drink something. Unfourtunately, by the time I got to the fountain drink machine, i was outta it.

It felt like an hour, but it was only 5 mins. I woke up with my back up against the wall, and a buncha people staring at me, great. I was pretty woozy and disoriented and drank some water and went home, and still feel pretty phased from it all.

What i wanna know is if it was from not eating anything, or if my medication might have had an adverse effect and led to this.

Remeber im 6'3, 225, so i dunno if that plays into anything or not.

Sorry to hear this. Did you just start the medication or "up" the dose? If so, it could be the medication and you should talk to your doc about it.

It could be so many other things that may have caused it such as a panic attack ,blood sugar inbalance, iron deficiency, etc.

The best thing I can tell you is tell your doc everything so he can give you the best advice.

Ive been on the Dex. for about 7 months, and ive some side-effects im aware of. (i.e. irritablility, loss of appetite etc..)
The dose hadn't changed, so it leads me to think it wasn't the medication, but still it could be.

Reed, I take the same medicine and loss of apetite and having trouble sleeping is the biggest side effect I've noticed. There are many times that I will go too long without eating because I have no apetite. There is a good chance that was the reason you passed out. Do you take time release pills (so you only take one a day)? Those work well for me and i take 10 mg a day it used to be 15 but I lowered it once I graduated. I hope you're feeling better cutie!!

You take 4 when you wake up? Hmmm, it seems like they should be spaced out if they're not time release. When I was on Ritalin I would take one every 4-6 hours but I couldn't handle a strong dose that many times a day so the time release help. Just a thought.

Aggie, i dont use the time realease, i use the type you just take in the morning and it wears off depending on how many you take. Hence because school is about 6-7 hours, i need four to last the entire day and some afterwards.

In all seriousness, you should get that checked out by a doctor ASAP. Completely blacking out is never a good thing, and if it's not the medicine, there could be something else wrong that needs to be checked out, pronto.

More important than anything, and I'm ashamed at everyone for overlooking this...but what happened to the sub? Did you fall on it? Bring it home and eat it? What happened to the sub?

I also agree that the pills your taking as far as I know...I don't take those but I know someone who does and they always space out the dosage. Usually when they take them close together they tend to get light headed, so this is probably what happened with you.

DCREED - You know I'm not an MD, but based on your history, I would suspect that not eating at all until 3:00 PM (and taking your meds on an empty stomach to boot) could have contributed to the fainting, which could just be a vasale vega (fainting of unknown origin).

However, it is particularly troubling that you report a loss of color vision. This could be a symptom of a TIA or minor stroke.

You passed out and were unconscious for 5 minutes and awoke feeling woozy and disoriented. This could be a symptom of a seizure.

Hopefully it's nothing, and you just had a fainting spell. Almost everyone gets at least one at some point in their life.

There is no way to tell without a full nueorlogical workup. I URGE you to see your doctor immediately and tell him or her what happened, giving as much detail as possible.
