A shitty way to start the day off. The space shuttle has exploded upon re-entry. It's gonna be a sad day. I have always been fascinated with space and to have this happen is truly a sad event!

Please excuse the name...My Brooklynlivecam username seems to have been killed

I wonder how the people in canaveral working for NASA can just sit there all calm in these news shots. If You were in that situation wouldn't you be freaking out?

The people are picked and trained to remain calm in these situations. Imagine firemen panicking everytime they arrive at a fire scene!!!

But NASA workers arn't in the situation every day where a shuttle crashes. Firefighters deal with that on a consistant basis.
Im just saying it seems strange.

This is truly sad. I was a senior in high school when the Challenger exploded during take off. I have the same feeling of helplessness that I did back then. All my prayers to the families of the crew of Columbia.

It's still not offical. lets not jump the gun. for all we know it might have exploded but the astronuats survived some how. Let's keep and open mind about this.

I hate to sound like a recording...but here is what I wrote in the other post about this...

People you have to realize that in over two hundred missions between the United States and Soviet Union/Russia that THE most dangerous part of the mission is the re-entry. The thing we have ALWAYS taken for granted is that every UNited tates Mission Since Project Mercury in 1959 there has ALWAYS been a successful recovery of every capsule since that project. We have to wait and see what happened to that project. This business (piloting) is a business frought with death. Just cause it doesnt happen often doent mean that it cant happen. The Columbia wass the oldest shuttle in service today. It was flown initially by John Young and Robert Crippen on April 14, 1981. (Ironically making Young the most travelled man in the history of avionics between projects Gemini, Apollo and the Shuttle). Let us not run to conspiracy theorys before we have our facts. If anyone needs any questions answered regarding the space program feel free to email them my way...thank you.

ironic how it happens a few days after the anniversary of the challenger explosion

It is just that young Padawan, an Irony...although Irony is not the right choice of words for Irony means when ya expect one event to happen and another occurs. People would have of expected something to happen to Columbia. This is more of a coincidence than an Irony...

When I saw this morning, I also remembered the whole challenger explosion and watching it in high school and being in just amazement of this. It gave me those dousche chills again that I had that day. Now there showing interviews of the astronots before the mission, pretty weird.

perhaps it hit something. even a small meteorite at those speeds could breech the hull and cause the shuttle to implode, then explode.

Even further irony or coincidence- the other two big tragedies in NASA history were January 28, 1986 Challenger explosion, and on January 27, 1967, part of the Apollo program when a flash fire occurred in command module 012 during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle being prepared for the first piloted flight. Very odd that they are all around this time of year
