This here is something that I have been pondering posting for some time. I am not trying to make light of the situation just want to get a nice discussion rolling.
The topic of racism.
Not just racism per se but, If we were blind and had no sense of sight whatsoever and never knew there was skin color, would there still be racism in our society?
This came to me a month or so ago when I was listening to Eddie Trunk's show on a Friday night. Eddie was doing his feedback segment and a regular caller, Dave from Irvington called in and had was talking with Eddie about the general love or heavy metal and how the music plays such a part in his life. Eddie then mentioned the fact that not only was Dave blind but he was also black and that got me thinking about the stereotypes that we in society sub-consciously have for one another and how it affects out day to day lives. My stereotype first hand is that heavy metal is predominantly white. Whereas I say rap or even blues and you think black. I mean why is there such a shock there when a group breaks the color barrier? If we could not see, would there be a color barrier.
Now I suck at writing and am struggling with some ideas here but I got talking with 8-Track Reed tonight and it struck up a nice little conversation on the matter. Like if we never had sight, if that sense was just not there and back in the 60's when Rosa Parks walked onto that bus, would she have been discriminated against because of how she sounded? Would racism in our society today, even stereotypes concerning race be based on how we sound or smell more than what we look like. A first impulse is when you see something that looks odd, you laugh or point or heckle. If that sense was not there, would there be a basis for discrimination then?
I am gonna stop here and come back on it tomorrow after some sleep. Just something I wanted to roll off here. Hopefully I got my thoughts across nicely. I am interested to see how this pans out in conversation.
Also feel free to rip me if I have somewhere misspoken on anything.
I really hope to get some intelligent response to this and I trust the racism will be non-existent.
