Fascinating show on HBO called "Guilty go Free" showing 3 cases brought before a parole board and we see the parolee argue for their release. The show takes you through the original trial
-better than any crime drama on tv.
Question - what does it take to work on the Parole Board? are these attorneys? Politicians? Does it take speical training? Id LOVE To be on a parole board.

Each state has it's own rules.

In New York, every parole board member is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate for a six-year term. The governor chooses one of the members of the board to head it. There are no special requirements (such as a law degree) to serve (other than getting chummy with the Governor and getting confrimed by the Senate)

Basically, the parole board interviews each prisoner at predisgnated times in their sentance and determines whether they should be released. If they do (BOO! HISS!) they are remanded to parole supervision. They also set the conditions for parole.

I think the whole idea of parole is crap. The violent criminals in jail should have been killed. Those there on "possession" charges shouldn't be there in the first place. In any event, reducing the sentence to free up jail space is an insult to the victims, the judicial system that convicted the criminal and to the future victims of the animals that are released.

THanks for the info. The show ended and 2 out of 3 were granted parole. The one who was not had an IQ of 70 and clearly was mentally disabled. Too many details to repeat here, but it seemed to me they released the 2 "normal" looking guys and didnt the guy who looked "psycho" even though the likelyhood of a repeat offense is just the opposite.

Depending on the nature of the crime, the odds of repeat offense range from small to inevitable.

It's well known that prison rarely rehabilitates the people who need it most. It does give crash courses in how to be a better criminal.
