This is for any of the computer whiz's out there.

I had three networked computers at home all running Windows ME. My wife's computer developed some problems after the kids installed a game they got in a box of Captain Crunch (not kidding).

I reformatted her drive and reinstalled Windows ME.

The problem is that the ethernet card is not detected properly. It shows up as a "PCI device" not an NDC Ethernet card. The other computers on the network don't see her computer on it.

Windows won't even let me install "internet file sharing" until the hardware setup is complete. I removed and reinserted the network card to no effect. Each time, only a "PCI device" was detected and it didn't recognize the drivers for the ethernet card.

Can anyone help with this?

HordeKing,

I just spoke with a co-worker and he reported having a very similar situation, he has WindowsME but has a Linksys LNE100TX Nic card. He stated that ME did not have the specific driver he needed so he had to do the following:

go to the web-site for the Manufacturer of the NIC card and download the driver for ME to a floppy on one of your other pc's.(of course it has to be able to get out to the Internet) Take that floppy to the "troubled" pc and put it in the A: drive...

STEPS

> right mouse click on MY COMPUTER
> Properties
> Device Manager
> Click on device(shows as PCI)
> Update Driver
> browse to the A: drive
> it may say that "this is not the best driver" but still click okay to use it

My co-worker recalls the steps may be slightly different for ME...

I'm sure someone else on the Board would be able to refine the procedure!

Hopefully this is helpful!

The drivers you need may be here. They will usually fit on a floppy.
http://http://www.ndclan.com/support/driver.htm

The trick generally is to NOT use the "automatically detect" option when you have such problems but the "have disk" option and then load them from a floppy.

Hope this helps a bit HK!

Eveyone is correct Horde. You see PCI device listed because the drivers are not installed. Just go directlty to the card's website and get the drivers. They will fit on a floppy. Before you do that tho, please uninstall Windows ME. I would suggest upgrading to a better version of windows. If you have a highspeed internet connection, you can basically download any version of windows that you want. If you need any help, feel free to get my AIM name in my profile and IM me anytime during the day.

you asked for advise, here it is. DON'T USE WINDOWS ME! It is the worst OS ever. Mircosoft doesn't ship models with that installed anymore for a reason... It is a failed, bug-infested, total piece of crap. Get XP Pro, or go back to 98. As for the network card, look on it, get the model no. and company. Search yahoo for their website, Go there(search for the product) and download the drivers.

you asked for advise, here it is. DON'T USE WINDOWS ME! It is the worst OS ever.I second that. Windows ME, is probably the worst Microsoft made OS compared to OSes after Windows 95. I suggest you invest in another, even if it means degrading (not exactly :)) to Windows 98. If you havent already, contact the costomer service of the network card and maybe Microsoft. I think it was probably the program from the cereal. It was probably defective, and screwed up your memory.

Thank you for all the helpful advice.

I downloaded new drivers from the manufacturer and they installed without any problem at all. The machine recognized the ethernet card and everything else.

Thanks again.

Should the HordeKing get his own board to discuss his questions? He's the only one who cant ask questions in Ask The HordeKing. We'll call it "Answer the HordeKing"
