with homemade gravy
When you say gravy, I assume you mean sauce. Could I get a ruling on this please? See, this is why we should really have some kind of a food mod. I would like a definitive answer and rule made about this. Where does it end, I mean, can I just show up one day and start calling a pork chop a steak? It's ridiculous, Goddamit, and tantamount to anarchy!!

Southern Italians call it "gravy". My grandmother's family is from Tuscany so we've always called it "sauce".

Pasta, pasta or pasta.
Actually, the other night I had a variation on Rachael Ray's "Very Special Rice" - rice with slivered almonds, "cookie spices", & rehydrated dried cranberries & blueberries.
It was very yummy.
I also have whole wheat pasta which I eat less of b/c it's denser than regular, and it was on sale, so I guess I've got a plan to stay healthy, too.
Tomorrow, I might have rice & broccoli in vegetable broth. Mmmm. Like soup only not.

I heard somewhere recently that the Italians have an expression that roughly translates to 'Below Rome, it's all African.' I forget where I heard it, but what does it tell you?

i hate the sauce/gravy debate...call it what you want just don't try to convince someone to call it something different...that redundant arguement is something i could live without ever hearing again
does it have something to do with if there is meat involved?

Since I'm Italian and stuff, I grew up learning that the red tomato stuff is "gravy". The brown stuff you put on your turkey is "brown gravy."

I just cooked a small roast beef for me and my father. I marinaded it in red wine vinagrette, lemon juice, and lime juice, and added a bunch of spices to it. It came out great and I'm very proud of myself.

Red = sauce
Brown = gravy
so I guess she's putting that brown stuff you usually put on turkey on her spaghetti and meatballs :-)
Southern Italians call it "gravy". My grandmother's family is from Tuscany so we've always called it "sauce".
Um, no - I've never known any italians to call the red stuff anything but sauce - in fact they get quite pissed if you suggest anything else. As for the north / south - my mother-in-law's side is all southern italian, and father-in-law's all northern and it's all sauce to them. Either way, it's all good.

Really? Every time I've heard the term "gravy" it's been from a Southern Italian. Oh well, like you said it's all good.
I wish that I could find a place down here with decent sauce/gravy....
