This is pretty cool, where can I get me one of these (the cloak..not the asian).

A Japanese scientist has developed a coat which appears to make the wearer invisible.

It's hoped the technology will be useful for surgeons frustrated their own hands and surgical tools can block their view of operations and pilots who wish cockpit floors were transparent for landings.

Why does the "invisibility cloak" only work in the center of the body?

The person's hands and arms block whatever object he holds them in front of. (In other words they're entirely visible.)

2 options seem likely.
1. Photoshop
2. The view in back of the person is projected to the front of the cloak. There has been many attempts at this (mostly having to do with military applications). There has been a lot more success making planes (for example) "invisible" to radar than to the naked eye. If I recall Popular Science had an article about a way to defeat the "invisibile" planes by just triangulating their location with 3 old fashioned radars.

I had to re-read it after what chicken hawk said, and I did notice they said:

"The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect."

Sorta had me tricked they really invented one.

So the coat acted as a TV type of "Green Screen", where somthing is inserted onto it like the weather people on tv, where the weather is insterted in the back

some animals have a "fake eye" spot on the back of thier heads...

it's to scare off another animal that may eat it but more than likely it only means the poor bastard never sees it coming...
