I know in a lot of states that alcohol such as wine, whisky and other forms of alcohol can be bought in food stores right alongside bread, eggs, meats, etc...
But for some reason in this area and other status you can only get beer or wine coolers, etc. Why is this?
Also, why is it (in this area as well) that alcohol can't be sold on a Sunday

I recall reading about this in law school.
The "no liquor on Sunday" laws (also called "Blue Laws") were the Church's attempts to control personal morality with religion. Other blue laws that I recall (that are no longer in effect) include prohibitions against the mortal sin of dancing and singing on Sunday.

I don't know about other states, but in Pennsylvania, liquor sales are completely controlled by the state. You can only buy alcohol at state-owned wine and spirits shoppes, or at designated beer distributors.

I grew up in New York. Beer is sold in supermarkets there. I moved to Jersey 13 years ago. There are several liquor stores in my neighborhood, so I'd get beer there. I didn't have a car, so I couldn't go to the supermarkets near me. One time a bunch of us were hanging in my apt and we decided to get beer. It was a Sunday so the liquor store on the corner was closed. We drove to the supermarket to get beer. I was living in Jersey for 5 years before I realized I couldn't buy beer at a supermarket!
The 2am "last call" sometimes cheezes me. BUT, sometimes you can take a six "to go."

There are "blue laws" in Bergen County, NJ. No retail stores are open, only restaurants and supermarkets and such.

In New York you can't sell alcohol on Sunday until after 12 noon. Then it's okay. Sounds dumb to me too, but hell, I don't drink anyway.

The "Blue Laws" vary from state to state.
I don't recall why they were called the Blue Laws. Does anyone have any information about this?

Blue papers = blue laws. Good thing they weren't fuscia.
Interesting how these names come about.
Just like all of the religious and "moral" outrage generated about woman having (gasp) access to birth control was called "Comstockery". Andrew Comstock was the Postmaster general who had and exercised his broad power to seize and destroy any "immoral" mail. He, as a religious man, thought woman having access to birth control was immoral. Back alley abortions he had no trouble with.
Interestingly, in the same era, circa WWI, men were given condoms so they wouldn't get VD. Women weren't important enough to even permit a diaphraghm. Most civilized countries had been using them for years.
