Yea yea I know I worded the
question horribly but whats
the answer and I am not
talking just American's and I
would also count the shuttle
in 86 even though they never
made it to space.... And yes
my definition for an astronaut
is someone who flew up in
space.... Boy I worded this
horribly

As of 1993, there had been 214 designated American astronauts who actually participated in spaceflight. I would estimate that number to be about 270 today. A Russian who participates in the space program is a Cosmonaut and I do not know how many of them there have been. If I had to estiamte, I would say the number is 35% less than American astronauts.

I dunno, everytime they wanted to send someone to space in I Dream Of Jeannie, it was always Majors Nelson and Healy. I always felt sorry for the others.

Take a look at this website which has some basic facts about astronauts and space exploration.

Even better is a link to a page with an application to become an astronaut. How cool is that?
