My jaw is still aching after two days. Jesus, just the sight of that needle gives me an anxiety attack. And what's with the gouging and churning that thing around once they get it in?? (the needle you pervs) The worst is the Novocaine wearing off....

My dentist doesn't use an OBSCENELY large needle. '
I'd guess that they use a longer one to make sure they can reach whatever nerve they're trying to deaden.
YE GODS I can't spell!!! Thank you little EDIT button!

maybe the dentist is trying to compensate for something not being as big.

the Dentist who recently worked on my daughter said the pain that comes after the novacaine wears off mostly depends on how fast they inject the liquid... The faster they inject, the more it will hurt afterwards...
sounded logical...

The only obscenely huge needle I've ever seen was inserted into my spinal cord. I'd rather have root canal.
I called a friend who's a dentist and asked her about the size needles used to administer novicaine. She said there is a fairly standard size (I forgot to write it down), but that it can vary based on several factors.
1. If a LOT of novocaine is needed a bigger needle is preferred.
2. If the novocaine is being injected deeply (like for a root canal) a longer needle is preferred.
3. For little kids, no matter what the work that is needed a little needle is preferred, even if it has to be reapplied a few times, b/c kids freak out over big needles.
4. The site of the injection also (in part) determines the size of the needle.

right, if they have to numb the area located in the back of the mouth, they will need a longer needle to reach that spot...it does not necessarily mean that the needle is penetrating any deeper
