Why is it when you're swimming too long, or taking a bath or doing dishes or whatever, do your fingers get all wrinkley?

Coincidentally, this only happens to the living.

SUNNY - A cellular membrane surronds every cell. It's function is to allow different things INCLUDING WATER to pass into or out of the cell.

Water will move towards the highest concentration of salt. If the salt is more concentrated on the inside of the cell then water moves into the cell. This makes the cell bigger. If all of the skin cells on your finger get bigger, you wind up with a skin that is too big for your finger. This extra skin makes the wrinkles.

The skin cells on your hands and feet contain
high levels of keratin-laden cornified epithelium. This increases the absorbtion rate of water and explains why your fingers and toes get wrinkled and you ass (hopefully) does not.
