It seems that the UN has the credibility of a WWE Referee. I say we move them to Paris, the French deserve them and Jerry Lewis.
And to think that I "trick or treated" for UNICEF! Damn them!

I hope this b.s. over Iraq will wake the American people up to the fact that we have no business surrending any part of our sovereignty to the thugs that make up the UN.
Want examples?
Chair of the UN Human Rights Commission: Libya.
Chair of the UN Disarmament Commission: Iraq.
You can't make this stuff up.

I always thought the UN should have been HQ'ed out of Berlin. First, we needed to rebuild that city anywAY, but it's more than that, If that's where the modern era ended, and we entered the post modern, if that's where this bold new world was to have started, with the destruction of the Nazis' then we should have built it there. That way it would have been easier to quit the UN if it wasn't based out of NY.
I see the main purpose of the UN is to waste US and the rest of the western world's money.

The United Nations: Useless?
To the USA: Yes.
To the rest of the world: Apparently not.
As far as I'm concerned, Manhattan needs the real estate.

Worse than useless. Sanctimoneous, hypocritical and a collosal waste of money.
Just think of all the valuable parking spots we'd have if we tore down the UN! Everyone needs parking. No one needs the UN.

So why is it that so many Americans who view the UN as "useless" want to use the violation of UN-declared rulings against as the primary reason for invading? Don't get me wrong, I think the UN veered into "aimless-ville" within a few years of the Cold War ending...I just enjoy the delicious irony...

That is an insult to the good name of Earl Hebner. :)

Good question. My guess is that it provides a veneer of legitimacy to whatever actions we decide to undertake, and so comforts those who would tremble every time we take a decisive action.
In point of fact, however, subjecting our foreign policy decisions to the UN is subjecting them to a group of individuals that we did not elect, who do not answer to us, and who often are, to one degree or another, actively seeking our downfall. (I know it sounds like I am describing our politicians, but these guys are even worse.)
I also wonder about what kind of colossal costs are involved in the buying of Security Council votes.

Eh, providing a vehicle for communication between various nations isn't a terribly bad idea in theory. In practice, it's not terribly useful to anybody as there isn't much in the way of actual enforcement going on, no?

It's becoming more and more irrelevant, and if we wage a war without Iraq WITHOUT a 2nd U.N. resolution (which may very well happen), and win (which is extremely likely), than the U.N. may be exposed as all but entirely useless. Personally, I feel it's time that the U.S. pulls out of the U.N. and forms its own multi-nation committe set up to handle diplomatic issues, because the U.N. just does NOT cut it anymore. It hasn't for some time now.
So why is it that so many Americans who view the UN as "useless" want to use the violation of UN-declared rulings against as the primary reason for invading? You can divide that group into two factions.
Those who, for whatever (naive) reason, still place value in the U.N., and thus don't want to do jack squat without their okay.
And then there's the faction to which I belong. This faction doesn't really give a shit about the U.N., or who violates what resolution. We're just using the violations as an excuse so that the nations around the world who fall into the first faction's mindset will go along with what we want. In this case, military action.

Balless is more like it. For 12 years now they've done nothing but pass resolutions which Iraqi has blatently disregarded without any type of reprocussions except for us occassionally bombing the crap out of something. I thought the whole point was to present a unified multinational front, not for us to constantly have to play the bad cop. It just upsets me how we send our loved ones all over the world to die fighting other people's battles only to have them resent us for it.

The UN has been unwilling to act lately, but I still think we need to preserve the institution where nations have formal dialogue to achieve peace. Look, nobody is going to say the UN is perfect, but it has accomplished a lot in its 50 years.
