A friend of mine makes a big deal that when he was being born, he crapped when his mom was delivering him.

I was watching maternity ward on TLC the other day and they said this does happen. So, my question is, how come babies crap inside then and not as teenie tiny fetuses when it gets "recycled"?

Because at a certain point during labor, the connection between the placenta and the uterus is severed and the baby's wastes can no longer be resorbed into its bloodstream and transferred back to mom's blood.

btw for animals that are not carried by mom (i.e. non-mammals) usually the embryo's wastes are diffused directly into the environment through its egg (this occurs in the water, not on land), or else, in the case of egg-laying terrestrial animals, the egg will have a sac inside of it where all the embryo's waste products are collected.
