View Full Version : Deadly Fire at Rhode Island Great White Show!

It's on late night on all the news channels. Hair Band Great White was playing a show, when the Pyrotechnics to bring them to the stage went up like a tinderbox and engulfed the club in flames. There appear to be signifcant casualties, and the Great White guitarist was missing.
I guess we can stay with the Trunk report for full details on this tragedy! I can't imagine the rush to get out in a situation like this.

I've been watching the news coverage off and on since about 1:30am and this really sucks.
I've only recently started going out to clubs and shit and for now on when I go in I'm making sure I know where the exits are.

HOLY SHIT! I'm watching CNN now and this is pretty surreal. I didn't even know that Great White was still around. This is really tragic. It is beyond me why there is even pyro in small clubs anyway. I was reading the KISS Alive Forever book and it said stuff about how KISS almost sets places on fire with their pyro. Is this the first time is has ever happened?

Well I'm not sure if under 300 people in a RHode Island club constitutes still "being around". With that being said, theres atleast 39 dead because Some club owner assumed everything would be cool and it would be safe. Prick should have his nuts cut off.

Has anyone said if the amount of Lycra and hairspray in the venue had anything to do with the spread of the fire?

Ok - the stage went up in flames..all around the band and their electronics and equipment.
HOW Did the entire band get out with out a scratch?????
If they were given favoritism ahead of fans - id be really pissed.

I doubt that the band was given any kind of special treatment.
I've played in a million clubs where there was the load-in door was close to the stage. This door is not always a "known" exit to patrons, even though it is marked with an EXIT sign. It's human nature to try to leave the same way you came in. It's also human nature to run away from danger (duh!). The load-in door was, technically, closer to the fire than was the main exits.

Did the missing guitar player show up finally? as of about 10am he was missing.
There was no time for any special treatment anyway, if they werent out in a minute they died for the mostpart. I think everyone assumed theyd walk out of the place through the door easily enough but a few people ran, knocked somepeople down and then 30 seconds later it was a panic. I see that picture of the front door full of people all wedged in there and wonder how that can happen.

theres atleast 39 dead because Some club owner assumed everything would be cool and it would be safe.
No, the owner didn't know about it--the band just set them up and set them off. To back up The Station's club owner, the owner of the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, came forward with the contract for Great White's Feb. 14 show at his club; the contract was so detailed it even mentioned what COLOR OF M&M's the band wanted, but did NOT mention pyrotechnics at all--and the Stone Pony would not let anyone on stage with a pyrotechnic show.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/02/21/nightclub.pyro/index.html
First song in, they set off pyrotechinics. The band's guys just set it up and set it off, without asking anyone.
It's becoming apparent that the band never really asked anyone about this; they just went in and set off fireworks at little clubs like they were still playing stadiums.

Well we know that now, but when I posted earlier, we didnt. I dont think the singer knew of this, he wouldnt have said what he did on tv earlier if he knew it was thier fault.

The venue could hold up to 300 people. They say there were fewer than that. Yeah, that's about right for Great White.
The Smokinh Gun has the rider-- no mention of pyrotechnics.

true alice, but it does say that no video/audio of the performance is allowed. They may be able to sue the club owner for allowing that camera in there.

Ironically, the camera crew in the club that night was from a WPRI newscrew that was doing a piece on nightclub safety, after that Chicago nightclub incident.
The footage is really terrible to see... the ceilings in that were way too low, and Great White had these torches that were basically a few inches away from the ceiling tiles. It's utter stupidity that they decided to use them in a club as small as that place was. It was a very sad day today.

Yep, the reporter that was doing the story is half owner of the club with his brother. They are so fucked.

Great White plays a small club in Rhode Island:
At least 96 dead and 180 injured (35 in critical condition)
A large tanker holding 4 million gallons of unleaded gasoline explodes:
2 dead, 1 person in critical condition.

Stop Hair Metal Now!

Were they ever an Arena band? I n't think I've ever heard of them.
And dying at a fire at a Great White concert is slightly more embarassing then getting crushed to death by one of Carrot Top's prop trunks

Is anyone else pissed at the cameraman? I saw the tape and there are people fleeing for their lives who could not escape fast enough because he was blocking the door.

What a horrible way to go...
I think any way to die is probably pretty horrible.
I saw the footage from inside the club and it was horrible. People just running for their lives. It reminded me of the footage from the Columbine shootings from the security camera's. I saw "Bowling for Columbine" and I saw that footage for the first time and it really disturbed me.
My sympathies to all the families who may have lost someone.
