I like the song. Guilty pleasure. Not yet "played out" for me...Great guitar riffing...
But what the fuck is a "Yellow Ledbetter?"
Also, since there are about 50 or so versions, what do you think the best one is (venue/date)?

I'm the furthest thing from a Pearl Jam fan, but I absolutely love this song. The guitar work is incredible.
I've heard so many stories about this song since it originally showed up as a bside & started getting played on KRock. I've heard that the guitar part is "borrowed" from a Hendrix song, but I don't know enough Hendrix music to know which one. I've also heard that it was not borrowed from Hendrix, but was more of a tribute to his style...either way, a job well done.
As for the title, found this on a PJ website:
"Yellow ledbetter" was a leftover from the Ten sessions, Eddie had simply improvised the lyrics during the one-take session, singing whatever phrases happened to pop into his head (In concert, Eddie has outfitted "yellow ledbetter" with countless different sets of lyrics over the years). The song's odd title was a joke, in honor of a chicago friend of eddie's named Tim Ledbetter.
Why he was yellow, I'll never know, but who cares, right?
The original version that was the bside for the Austrian "Jeremy" CD single will always be my favorite simply because it was the version that got me into the song & the guitar work is more crisp than on any of the live versions I've heard. Plus, at least if someone wants to argue the lyrics with me to this version, I know what they are.

When a guy has to write a song to remind people not to call him daughter...you should understand that maybe....just maybe the drugs are writing these songs.

I always assumed the song was a tribute to the old blues guitarist Leadbelly (real name Huddie Ledbetter or somesuch). The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame website says he died of ALS, but maybe Eddie thought he had jaundice.
Or maybe its code and that kid Jeremy also had poor bladder control in addition to his other problems.
I agree with ya Chairman, it is some of their best work though.

i'm a major sickly obsessed pearl jam fan and i can tell you that the song is a tribute to little wing,a great hendrix song.the great guitar work you guys are talking about is done by mike mccready, one of the most underrated guitarists in the world!regarding daughter,he's not talking about himself dickbag,it's from a girls point of view.just because mtv and rolling stone magazine haven't force fed you pearl jam since 1994 doesn't mean they are bad.you can like stuff that's not played on trl...you are not all slaves...

except when you like a band named pantera, then you know there is no lead singer, the lead singer is now officially an actual drug, as you can roll up pieces of phil anselmo and get high off it.
