Horde King,

I believe i am not alone when I say that I feel unusually lazy on rainy days. Not sad or depressed, just the energy level runs low and i can't get enough of that couch...

Sometimes I think that it's a physical thing where the rain is keeping certain vapors or gasses that are normally higher in the atmosphere, down to ground level and we breathe these gasses or vapors and it makes us tired. Then I say that sounds kind of silly...

Is there any physical part to it or is it all mental/psychological?

And do people in Seattle or London feel lazy more than people in dryer areas?

Thanks!

FUNKMAN - You're certainly not alone in this feeling. Although it is not experienced universally, many people feel tired or lazy on rainy days. Many people feel that way during winter months. (You may have heard it being referred to as seasonal affective disorder).

I don't know the definitive answer to your question regarding phsyical vs psychological causes.

There have been some studies suggesting that the fall of barometric pressure brings about these feelings. However, other studies have shown that lazy feeling to be related to the perception of the weather (as opposed to the weather itself).

For example, people who were led to believe it was raining and ugghy outside felt sleepy and more prone to feeling down. However, they perked up when they discovered that it was really beautiful outside. This of course points to a more psychological (perceptual) explanation of the phenomenon

Like most things dealing with mood, I feel the safest bet is to say that both psychological and environmental factors influence us.
