View Full Version : Contact Lenses

I've been wearing glasses for a number of years now and have always considered switching to contacts. I think I'm finally ready to do this, is there a certain kind that are better than others? disposable vs permanant lenses. Or is one brand better than another?
I'd get laser surgery but I'm not in a position at this time to do it, so I figure contacts would be good for now.
Any suggestions on brands or types?

Are you going for just regular contacts or are you going for color. If color make sure it is a color your going to look good in. Because your going to have them for a while.

I've thought of color lenses, but I probably won't. I'm pretty sure I heard that disposable lenses and extended disposable lenses were the best but I don't remember.

I'm going to suggest that you go and ask your 'eye care professional'. They will suggest what is appropriate for you and your eyes and your lifestyle.

I will, however most people generally get the option of choosing disposable vs more extended types of lenses. My question is, if I'm faced with that option where I can choose whichever does anyone who uses them one way or the ther have experience they can share.
I understand what the doctor will say is important, but I want to know what others who've used both or either have to say.

Go with the daily disposables. Mine work out to be about a $1 a day. After many years of glasses I finally got up the nerve to go with contacts. I always got creeped out by the idea of touching my eyeball. After a while I didn't even notice it.
I used the CibaVision brand for about 2 years, but I always noticed that I had to get them out by 7-8 at night because they burned. My doctor recently switched me to Accuvue, which are lighter and more flexible. It seems your eyeball can swell after a long day of focusing. These new ones are more forgiving and last all day and night.
As someone else mentioned, see your doctor. As with anything, what works wonders for one person may not be suitable for another.

Hmm, I don't think I ever had the option of what type of lenses to choose - we sat, we chatted, and decided that the weekly disposables would work out all right for me. I had Hydron 55, then Acuvue. Never saw any real difference. Probably depends on your eye shape; some lenses come in more sizes than others do.

Disposables are definitely the way to go. They're much lighter and more permeable than regulars, so they're a lot more comfortable. They also require MUCH less care.

Definitely go with disposables. I had regular soft lenses when I first got contacts; they were just too much of a hassle, and I ended up getting severe abrasions on my eyes and had to go back to wearing glasses for about two years. As for brands, I use Acuvue 2's (both plain and colored), which are fairly cheap and effective.

I got them tonight. They're in right now and it's pretty great. It took a while to put them in, but they said I did fine and that it'll get easier over time. I'll practice over the weekend as well. My ride home was real interesting, all the signs and everything around me was so clear.
So far I love them and don't miss the glasses at all. The doctor said disposables are definitely the way to go. He said there's a few kinds, there's the ones that last 15-20 days and others that last about 30 days.
It'll be real interesting trying to take them out tonight, and then again in the morning. I may have to wake up extra early to practice.
Thanks for your help everyone.

so - which ones did you end up getting? which brand, power, and are they daily?
I have ones you toss after 2 weeks. I was a tough fit and had to take the ones i have due to my really bad eyesite 'Ciba' brand ( - 10.00).
I wear em longer than 2 weeks though when i shouldnt. My thinking is that some days i dont wear them or wear them for just 5 hours..so i get cheap and dont replace them enough.

Another great thing about disposables is that if you tear or lose one, you have more waiting.

Right now these are a trail pair, so I don't have a brand. When I go back on Thursday this week I'll be re-tested and the doctor will see how everythings working. Then he said we'll sit down and go over the brands and whatnot. I believe this pair can be used for 30 days though.

Good luck with the lenses.
I've been wearing glasses since I was about 4 and would love to wear lenses. Unfortunately, I can't. I've tried, hard, gas permeable, soft, astigmatic soft, and others but even on the rare occasions when I was able to get them in, my eyes became inflamed and teary. Plus, with my astigmatism, and bad vision (-11.50/-11.75) the best astigmatic lens doesn't provide nearly as sharp vision as do glasses.
My wife, oldest daughter and brother wear contacts and are very happy with them in all respects. On the advice of their doctors (3 separate ones) they buy the extended wear lenses good for a week, and discard them every day. This provides the maximum protection against infection, and the greatest comfort, as they are thinner than regular lenses.

I have an astigmatism in my left eye, but I got a toric lens for that eye and a regular lens in the right eye. So far they're working just fine.

The "toric" lens, is used to correct astigmatism. It works by using a weighted edge to keep one side of the lens pointing down constantly. It does not spin around in your eye like a regular contact lens.
However, toric lenses cannot completely correct astigmatism, particularly if you have bad vision to start, and the worse the astigmatism the blurrier the vision.

I've never heard of using toric lenses for astigmatism, but I may have to ask my eye doctor about that the next time I go in for lenses. I have astigmatism in my left eye, and all my doctor did was prescribe Acuvue 2's, which fit the eyes better than the original Acuvue's, but still tend to drift slightly off-center on my left eye.
