View Full Version : I'm Quitting...Who's With Me?
I'm going to try yet again to quit smoking. I've been eating healthier and lifting again, and when the weather gets a bit warmer I'd like to start doing some aerobic work too. I'll never be able to if I keep smoking like this.
I figure it might be easier if I get some of you maniacs to join me in kicking the habit. Come aboard the wagon here in this thread, and post all your "cheats" and lapses.
Be honest!

You know Gvac, im all seriousness I am too considering quitting here too. Either that or deal with the slight chest discomfort I get every now and again. As much as I love to smoke, especially with a pint, I know it is just going to be the better health decision for me to stop. I look at it as I have smoked for about 10 years now and I already know what having the smoke is like so WHY do it anymore. Or the better question, Why do I do it if I know it will have bad effects on my health?
This could be a good thing here kind of like a support group or NJ Quitline thinger. I would scare me shitless if Gvac would show up in my car and say NO SMOKING! They say that in the Quitline ad that someone will show up. It really is an honor system thing and I'll fess up if I start again.

I don't have any real advice but I can tell you what to expect in the very near future.I quit years ago.I don't have the addiction but I still have the craving. It's like when you go for a cancer stick because your body tells you it's time for one only because you "kicked" the habit you don't need to have one.Confused yet?Let me put it this way.If they came out with a "healthy" cigarette tomorrow,I'd be first in line.
He's some straight forward advice.Start stocking up on diet pills and Slim-Fast because you're gonna gain 30 lbs. in no time.
Good luck Greg.

Id like to quit smoking but then Id have to quit drinking too because I cant drink without smoking, but with the new no smoking rules going into affect I guess I might have too. I remember a year ago I quit for 3 weeks and i started eating everything in sight due to the fact that I had taste buds again. I even could walk up 3 flights of stairs to my apartment without feeling out of breath. Id like to quit but I honestly have no will power.

hey man, good luck. i smoked for like 8 years and i quit cold turkey 3 years ago on new years day.
to be honest man, if you have the will power its not that hard. first of all it's so expensive. second of all smoking just straight up sucks, it just stinks and it's annoying and it's just killing you.
but when it comes down to quitting there's only one thing to know, if you don't put a cigarette in your mouth you're not smoking. you don't need it to live, you won't die without it, just don't put one in your mouth and you're done. that may sound too simple but it worked for me, i just thought man if i just don't smoke i'm not smoking.
so fuck it dude, give that shit up. i know it gets hard like after you eat or especially when you're drinking at a bar because you're used to doing something.
but just think, honestly, am i that insecure that i can't just enjoy a drink without having to play with a flaming turd in my hand? just relax and don't pick one up, next thing you know you won't even need them anymore.
you're a good man gvac, you'll be even better without smoking. it's mad tough sometimes but just remember smoking stinks and you don't like it. and if a war started and we needed captain america to save the day, you'd feel a lot better if he was a nonsmoker.

Just thought of another tip to help you quit.
It's a mantra that has helped many. All you have to do is repeat it every time you feel the urge. Here goes(I think you know the tune).
Winston tastes good,
like a cigarette should.
No filter,no flavor,
tastes like toilet paper.

I'm now 2 weeks into it. I've quit twice before and this time is more difficult, but I'm determined to win.
One motivation was a statistic I saw somewhere that only 20% or so of the women out there smoke, so I decided to expand my target list.

Just noticed this post - if you have trouble, try taking Wellbutrin - (generic name bupropion) - it really helped me - it took three tries, but it finally worked - I have asthma and had to quit - it's also an anti-depressant, which doesn't hurt - only bad side effect was it was harder to achieve orgasm - but now I'm ok - smoke free for a year, and actually even quit smoking pot for the most part - just now and then - Good Luck! It can be done!

Really? I noticed when I when on the medication it made cigarettes taste terrible - but some people have told me it didn't have that effect with them - I still wanted to smoke, but when I was taking the meds, the taste of cigs made me nauseous - I would take a couple puffs and throw it away. I guess it affects different people in different ways - good luck anyway - I know it's really hard, but if you really wanna quit, you can...

Zyban, not Wellbutrin is marketed as an aid to stop smoking although they are essentially the same medication. Wellbutrin is marketed primarily for depression.
Wellbutrin is a good drug b/c it usually does not have the delayed orgasmic response typical of many other antidepressants.
EDIT: Not that I'm advocating either, but if you have to chose, pot is much less likely to kill you than cigarettes. In fact to my knowledge there has never been a case of pot smoking directly causing death.

The way I did it? I rationalized it in my mind... I made up my mind to think that if I can go 1 day without it, Ill be able to quit. So I said to myself, "self, do you wake up ever few hours when your asleep to smoke?" Answer= no
So, with that rational, I figured, if Im alseep for say 8 hours without a butt, I only need 16 hours to make that magic Day. So today, you smoke like a fiend, knowing that tomorrow your off from work, so tonite, when you go to bed, its your last cigarette...follow? When you awaken tomorrow, you already had 8 smoke free hours. Drink alot of water to flush yourself out. Get a cinnomen stick to hold in your mouth just in case. Every time your feel that lightheaded feeling that signals a craving.. you say..."Its not a craving! Its how my body feels to be recovering from all that smoke and shit!"
