There are always those actors who never have a true leading role, but you always recognize them when you see them and they usually are the mark of a quality film...
The ultimate to me is the late, great John Cazale.
Look at the last five films he made. In a row.

He only appeared in five films in his entire career as an actor. All five were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. He died of bone cancer (He was in the final stages while shooting "The Deer Hunter") on March 12, 1978. He was already 46, but his film career was just starting, and look at the roles he pulled off in those five films. I don't think any other supporting actor even comes close.
