View Full Version : Car $$ problem.

Here it is. I have a decent paying job, but a real shitty car. A real shitty car that I pay 3200 dollars a year to minimally insure here in the great state of NY. I would like to get a new car but I can't buy one outright. I can finance or lease one; I have the money and I have decent credit, but then I would have to get full coverage, which people tell me would double my current rate. I don't want to pay all that extra money because, 1, I don't know if I can afford to and, 2, out of general principle.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Maybe you could move to Nebraska. $3200 a year? I payed less than $700 for liability in New Jersey, which has the highest rates in the country. You must've been in a few accidents or something.

ADF, I had a bad year 2000. a speeding ticket in a school zone and an accident. Next insurance cycle, they should be too old to matter (as long as I don't do anything stupid. Plus, I'll be 25, so I am hoping my rates drop. But in the meantime, I am stuck with a piece of shit car on its last legs.

PATCHES - Even with the ticket and age (under 25) 3,200 sounds obscene for car insurance. Do you have an umberella policy protecting other things as well or is it limited to your car?
Have you taken the safe driving course. That knocks 10% off part of your bill
Have you shopped around for better deals on insurance?
Finally, although your car now is "shitty" by which I gather you mean old, buying a new car might save you money! Cars with air bags, good safety ratings, and low theft rates are economical than other cars b/c the insurance costs are lower.

Nope. Just basic liability insurance.

Yes, I did. I guess my insurance should be even higher.

Yes. In fact, I was w/ All State and when it came time for renewal, they wanted 4000. They even sent me a letter telling me to look for a cheaper rate.

This is true. Do you know how much (%-wise) insurance increases when you go from basic liability to full coverage? If it pumps me up only an extra grand it may be worth looking into.
Thanks.

Check out the Geico site. They're pretty reasonable. Plus, you can see how different coverage amounts affects the final cost of the policy onscreen.

Patches I'm sorry to inform you but your insurance rates won't drop until your 30. Single males are up SHITS-CREEK insurance wise until the 30th year of birth.
I live out here on LONG ISLAND.
My aunt was my Insurance agent with Nationwide and I was excited when I was coming close to 25.. She told me that it changed that year... I believe I told my favorite AUNT to go FUCK OFF... I know I screamed it loud.. She understood.. I made sure I kept my driving record as squeeky-clean as possible. I bought a new MAZDA Protege 5 last April my insurance was just under 2000. I just got my insurance for this year and my premium went down over 600 bucks. I turn 30 in October of this year. To keep my insurance under 2g's I had to keep off towing and glass.
All you can do is try to shop around(which I know really doesn't work with insurance companies) and keep your driving record super clean. Once you find a company you like stay with them as most will give you a discount for staying with them a long time. NATIONWIDE gives me a 160 a year discount because I have been with them so long.
When you are ready to purchase a new car go to www.edmunds.com and look at the insurance rate for that car.
Honda Civic's and Acura's have very high insurance because they get stolen more than anyother car.
Of course the Old's everyone grandparents drive are great for insurance but you wouldnt be caught dead in them. :)
If you are married the 30 year limit doesn't exist your insurance will go down at 25.

Dammit. I guess I better propose to my girlfriend ("I love you so much. Will you marry me so I can enjoy reasonable insurance rates?")
Anyway, I'll try HK's idea, and I'll also talk to my broker when I go there next week to hand them another ridiculous payment (I just realized I pay 4-5 times /year in insurance than what the car I am insuring is worth!)
Thanks all. Except for Moe. Friggin wiseass :-)
