Who deserves to be a permanent member? The US, of course. Ireland, naturally. But who else? Certainly France is no longer a relevant world power. Who deserves their spot. Russia, though still a major military power, has lost it's prestige in the world's view.

Who do you think the 5 permanent Security Council members should be?

Let's try not to take the cheap route and make this one long french joke. that'd be too easy.

When you have a nuclear capability, you are a relevant world power.

A little dated, perhaps...but...

First we got the bomb and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's O.K.,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way!
Who's next?

France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears;
They can't wipe us out for at least five years!
Who's next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white!
Who's next?

Egypt's gonna get one, too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense,
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb!
Who's next?

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb!
Who's next, who's next, who's next?
Who's next?

I think the system of permamnent Security Council members became outdated when they started recognizing mainland China as the legitimate authority. The idea was that those who won the Second World War would be on it. Unfortunately, the UN sold out Chiang Kai-Shek and recognized the Red Chinese instead.

France has typically wanted to think of themselves as more important that they really are. Even the great Charles DeGaulle (whose self-glorifying name literally means "The Gaul", "France") pulled out of NATO just to make France the third force in global cold war politics, separate from Democracy and Communism.

I think France has found a way to piss off just about every culture in the universe. My pet peeve is that they sold out Robert Emmet in Ireland. What's yours?

Whoever makes them happy, so long as we don't belong, and they relocate in France or Belgium. We need the parking space in NYC.

Good post furie. The question is what would be the criteria for membership. I would assume it would be influence or power in world affairs. In that case, the Five would be America (military might), Japan (economic power), United Kingdom (empire influence), China (population), and Saudi Arabia (most oil). You could easily substitute India or Indonesia into the mix anywhere as well. Russia and France have no place in the Council anymore as they are fallen powers clinging to relavance. I am not a big fan of the current workings of the UN, nor have I been very pleased with their performance. New realities call for new structures, and the UN has outlasted it's intention.

chiang kai shek's a turd. he let the japanese rape his country, then he lost it to a peasant army. he deserved to rule a small island unrecognized by the inept UN.

i dont think a county that's lost all wars in the previous century deserves a spot. i mean, can you honestly convey any sense of SECURITY when you cant even defend yourself? and having a nuke shouldnt give you an automatic seat when you have a blood feud with your neighbor. also, if you're a former superpower that leeches on the only other superpower left, then you shouldnt be on the council as well. that just leaves Britian, China, and the US. that'll do.

I say Russia should be on the council because they are the biggest country. China because it has the biggest population. US because we rule all. Japan because they be rich. The UK because we take care of our friends. Canada should be on there to fulfill the requirements of the Disabilities Act. Mexico should be on there to represent the minorities. And France should be the planetary bitch. Every year a random country gets to invade them and do whatever they want with the country. That'll teach'em for laying down to the Nazis!

There should be no permanent members of the Security Council. The current members should be Nicole Kidman (Australia), Jennifer Aniston (US), Anna Kournikova (Russia), Catherine Zeta Jones (UK), and Penelope Cruz (Spain).

They should settle their differences by mud and jello wrestling, and we should take the results with all the seriousness that current UN outcomes deserve.

New members would be added as current ones become old and skanky.

Germany? On what planet do you live. Actually, I think the Germans should be on the council. They are the economic powerhouse in the EU.

You're a putz. Chiang Kai-Shek was the Allied commader of the air war in Asia and the winner of World War II. Not Mao, Chiang.

Chiang Kai-Shek was the Allied commader of the air war in Asia and the winner of World War II.

no, he was more like the guy who constantly yelled, "hey guys! wait up!". japan had their way with him. he tagged along for the 'victory'. just because he sided with the allies doesnt mean he actually did anything of worth to the allied cause. it took 2 nuclear bombs to defeat japan, not some bald-headed impotent leader's support. when that country can actually defend itself, instead of running to the US every time they see a missle, then maybe the rest of us should respect and recognize them.
