American Flag Vandals Break Windows to Protest War

(2003-03-11) -- After learning that they would not be arrested for destroying privately-owned American flags because police consider it 'free speech', a group of anti-war protestors in La Habra, CA, have taken to breaking windows in private homes and cars in the neighborhood.

"We're damaging these homes and vehicles as a form of political speech," said one unnamed protestor as she slammed a brick through the window of a Lexus. "We object to the military-industrial complex and capitalist oppression."

Before they started exercising their free speech rights on windows the antiwar protesters had burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard, according to a report in the Whittier Daily News.

Although police witnessed the vandalism Saturday afternoon, they did not arrest three people seen damaging the display because they were "exercising the same freedom of speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt. John Rees said Monday. "For this to be vandalism, there had to be an ill-will intent."

The protestors insisted they bore no ill-will against the people whose property they were destroying. Local police passively observed as one protestor set a house on fire to dramatically express what might happen to oil wells in Iraq if the U.S. attacks.

this is insane... first of all how do you call 3 people "protesters"? how do 3 people protest? these were not protesters, these were vandals. calling them protesters is clearly spinning the story to bash real protesters. trust me conservatives, these were not protesters, these probably were ignorant psuedo-radical anti-americans who just wanted to destroy something regardless of what it is.

This country is founded on freedom of speech, and the freedom to protest. But for people to desecrate a 911 memorial is beyond words. Thats not speech, its a bunch of assholes who have nothing better to do than destroy property and hide behind the 1st ammendment. If this really was a protest against the the upcoming war than it only goes to show how ignorant some in the anti war crowd are.
I will respect anyone who disagrees with the policies of any nation "ours included" but there are ways to go about showing your dissaproval without burning the flag or destroying a memorial.

RandomNY

They destroyed people's cars because these people had the gall to hang a flag? That is BULL these were just a set of vandals with nothing better to do. I doubt it really would have matter if the people's cars and homes they destroyed might be against this war and just hung the Flag to show thier patriotism because of 9/11.

The cops that allowed this should be fired. The people whose property was destroyed(last I checked Destroying people's cars and homes IS NOT LEGAL) should sue the town board, the police, and the 3 VANDALS because of this.

I happed to be in favor of this war.

I find some of the ANTI-WAR protest to be in very bad taste. Everyone is right in saying 3 people is not a protest. They are just trying to hide behind the 1st amendment to avoid prosecution for vandalism.

Random, the car article was a joke by AJinDC. They did wreck the guys fence though.

It's official, the war has taken so long to actually happen, that people are losing their minds at an even higher rate than usual. Between jackholes descretating 9-11 memorials to the rush on duct tape, the apes will be running the show in no time.

Please, Mr. Collison, file charges. Then extradite them to N.Y.C. where our hardcore cops can adminisitor The Louima. Stupidity should be painful.

Let's remember that this 9/11 memorial is just a symbol. As the more liberal posters lectured to us last week about the flag, no one can tell you how you should interpret a symbol. That memorial means different things to different people, so who are we to chastise those individuals who viewed the memorial as a representation of US policy? Property damage aside, this is a case of free speech, just like that girl turning her back on the flag that so many in here supported. Where are the defenders now?

Really, I think the 3 of them suck. It is interesting to me however that some those who were so wrapped up in defending someone's right to determining symbolism (the flag) are now decrying this group's attempts to do the same thing. Some consistancy would be a good thing.

There is an obvious difference between protesting (free speech, even if to some that means flag burning) and destroying property (whether it be 9-11 memorials or whatever). And simply grouping three idiots destroying property or memorials with everyone else who stands for various mediums of free speech is a simply ridiculous.

I do not belive my eye's. This is a joke. This can not be true. You mean to tell me that police stood by and watched 3 people burn american flags and 9/11 memorial and smash windows. You see this is the part of the problem with this country, everybody is worried about being "P.C." . There is no way in hell you can tell me that by doing what they did that it is not vandalism, so now if I feel like it I can walk outside throw a brick through a car window and say I am doing this because I protest the war in Iraq, Insane absolutely infuckingsane. Also since when does 3 people constitute a protest, this is bullshit. Then again they are in California things seem to be different there, but let these fucks come to New York or Jersey and do that shit. First the people would kick there ass then the cops would probably kill them not to mention the Fire fighters. I don't know what this country is coming too.

What? The basketball player wasn't physically hurting anyone, attacking anyone or anything or damaging her own or anyone else's property. These assholes went out of their way to destroy something that didn't belong to them and then damage someone else's personal property. There's no "consistancy" because it's not even remotely close to being the same issue. The issue here isn't symbolism, it's people destroying something that they wasn't theirs and attacking someone's personal property. It wasn't a protest...it was a series of crimes.

I was being mostly sarcastic with what I posted, and if you actually think I believe stuff like that normally then you've never read any of my posts before. I think the 3 guys are punks without any idea of what they were doing besides smashing crap and should be nailed for it. Of course they are guilty of property damage and vandalism, but that's not what I was really referring to. To me it seems that people are more aghast about destroying a symbol of 9/11 than destroying a US flag. That is what the underlying point of my post was, that posters seem to care more about a symbol of our grief rather than the symbol of our greatness.

What if one of her classmates had a parent or family member serving in the military?

So what? She's not sabotaging their equipment or stabbing them in the eye or kicking them in the shins. Our soldiers aren't pansies. One whiny little snot isn't going to get them down. Every war we've been in has had to suffer an anti-war movement (Even WW2, almost 2 million strong), and our troops seem to have done just fine.

It could have caused a major disturbance and it could have lead to violence

But this didn't happen, so it's not really comparable to the dipshits that tore up the memorial. And even if a "disturbance" was caused, you'd still blame her more than, say, a bunch of people who started tearing up the gym or turning over cars because they didn't like what she was doing? She wouldn't be the one smashing everything.

Personally, I believe that the only TRUE anti-war demostrations are ones involving peaceful assembly.

To destroy property, savage memorials, scream, name-call, accuse or abuse is to take part in the very thing being protested: violence. One cannot be violently anti-war.

You can tell the true peace demonstrators from the "me-tooers" by how they conduct themselves in their protest.

The people in this article were not anti-war demonstrators; they were vandals.

They should be treated as vandals, and they should apologize not only to the people whose memorial they destroyed, but to anyone who has truly worked toward peace.

What the hell has happened?

That's a good point, 40 years ago something like this wouldn't happen. But it was a different time. remember in the 60's they had their own violence. waterhoses and attack dogs, the assassination of Leaders, National Guardsmen firing on protesters, Rioting in the streets so intense that entire sections of cities were blockaded. Violence always seems to rear its head in one form or another, the best we can do is keep it to the outskirts and not let it destroy the message.
