View Full Version : My job interview got into politics
Today on my job interview the person asked me what my opinion on the war was. Did I support the president or not?
I answered it but I don't know, do you think that's an appropriate question to ask an interviewee?

Not appropriate at ALL. That's pretty fucked up...that kind of questioning obviously could totally bias them one way or the other.

What type of job were you interviewing for?
Perhaps your feelings on the subject will be directly related to your performance on the job.
If not, the interviewer is a lunatic.

It was for a law firm. I think the partners are pretty conservative.

Whether the question is legal or not, it's moot. Whatever answer you give or don't give will bias the potential employer one way or another. In other words. you're screwed if you do and you're screwed if you don't!!!!!

Unfortunately I don't believe it's illegal but it is certainly not appropriate unless the employer has a good reason for asking it. For example, this law firm might represent Iraqi interests in the US. (Just an example.)
From what I recall these are the illegal questions/employment that may not be asked. Questions related to:
Age
Gender
Race
Color
Religion
Country of national origin
Marital status
Disability (except as it pertains to the job)
Sexual preference
Questions of sexual content
If you were asked such a question and were denied the job, you can contract the Attorney General's Office and even bring a suit against the employer. However, it's a difficult battle, b/c the employer typically claims that the question was asked in error, and the reason you weren't hired had nothing to do with your answer.
Whether or not you get the job, I'd suggest you call the guy who interviewed you and ask him why he aksed you this question. Perhaps he'll admire your temerity.

Yea, I'd say that's a pretty "out of bounds" question. It shouldn't effect your performance.

i think the question's sort of inappropriate, but you can't really be sure why they were asking it. it's more than possible that they just wanted to see how you'd respond to a difficult question (as opposed to the usual interview drivel), and whether you could express yourself well, and are up on your current events. that all said, i think they could have tested these things in a better way. bad firm.

Ari you raised several intersting points, the most intriguing being that they asked to see how he would respond or react (as opposed to what he'd answer).
It still is innappropriate.

I find it to be an outrage. You're opinion on that matter should have no business in a job interview.

If you're serious about a lawsuit, make sure you go to one specializing in employment discrimination. There are many, many factors here and they will best be able to advise you as to the viability of your suit and whether it would be worthwhile financially to pursue.

Nah, I'm just kidding. I want to work in the city someday. I don't feel like pissing in the future employment pool.
